Default 1936-37 Goudey Wide Pen Premiums - Checklist

Does anyone have a checklist of the various Wide Pen Premiums types?

Type 1 is pretty easy to find…but the others are proving to be a bit elusive for me.

I have several that I’m trying to checklist, but I’m having a hard time determining whether one of my Hildebrand cards is a Type 2 (“no litho in U.S.”) or a type 4 (1937 creamy/Canadian). I have a Type 1 (“Litho in U.S.”) and a Type 3 (borderless) of Hildebrand. But I can’t find which type this one belongs to.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Default Old Cardboard website and Issue #7

I did an extensive article on the sets for Old Cardboard a few years ago (the issue should still be available for purchase at oldcardboard.com). They have much info, including the basic checklists for the sets, on their website as well.

Yes, but it doesn’t have my card with borders. I like TCDB, but it isn’t perfect. In this case, it was useless for me.

Awhile back I was looking for a more complete listing for the Wide Pen issues, and came across this checklist on the OBC site:

https://oldbaseball.com/m/MegaCheckl...R314&year=1936

After doing some additional searching, I was able to piece together the below information for the various sets. Most or all of this info is probably in Tim's Old Cardboard article he mentioned...I just didn't dig it out.

The 'A' cards refer to the most common set with borders and "Litho in USA" on bottom border. The checklist only has 119, and should have 120, but I did not bother checking what was missing. This is I believe identified by some as Type 1.

The 'B' checklist shown actually is for two separate sets (Type 2 and Type 3) that share the same 25 card checklist, specifications below:

Type 2 has borders, but no "Litho in USA" on the bottom border.

Type 3 has no borders, and thus no "Litho in USA" on the bottom border, because the bottom border does not exist.

The 'C' checklist, or Type 4, has 25 players featured on creamy stock instead of white, has borders, and does not have "Litho in USA" on bottom border.

The 'D' checklist, or Type 5, was issued in Canada, has a mat finish instead of glossy, and creamy paper stock. The checklist in the link has 39 players listed (I believe all International League players). From other sources 12 additional Detroit Tigers players are part of this set, as follows:

Tommy Bridges
Mickey Cochrane
Pete Fox
Charles Gehringer
Goose Goslin
Hank Greenberg
Ray Hayworth
Bill Rogell
Schoolboy Rowe
Al Simmons
Gerald Walker
Jo-Jo White

Hopefully the above breakdown is all correct...Tim is definitely our fellow with the knowledge to correct me.

Based on the checklists and the above information, I would believe the Hildebrand shown is a Type 2.

Thanks all for your help. A fellow member reminded me that I might find a checklist in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards book. I am so “new school” that I forgot that a physical book is even something to use. Unfortunately, I’m working with the 2003 edition and this edition didn’t break down the Goudey Wide Pen types. That said, based on feedback from a few experts in this domain, the example I shared is a Type 2 since Hildebrand wasn’t issued in Type 4 (creamy) or Type 5 (ML and Detroit Tigers).

The 2014 Standard Catalog has all five checklists broken out separately. I know I'm a bit late to the party here; however, let me know if I can be of further help.

Agreed with above assessment, plus there's a chance premiums lacking "litho in USA" text got some Canadian distribution as '36-37 World Wide Gum wrapper exchange promos, since MLB cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Hildebrand's Cleveland Indians sat within radio broadcast distance of our northern border. I bet defending champs Detroit in particular had a Canadian following!
