Default More 1920's Blank Backs.

I now have two of these 1920's blank back cards. (Uncataloged?)I have seen Grimes, Coveleskie, Ruether, Rixey and Faber. Who distributed these cards? Year? Checklist? More than one type? Different checklist than the 1931(blank back)UNC-Strip card set with a better picture on some. Has anybody done any reaserch on these cards or own an example to share?

If you look in the 2006 SCD Catalog. There are 2 sets of W502 cards, 1928 and 1931. But there is only one set of the related "W-Unc. Strip Cards", 1931. There should be 2 sets listed inder "W-Unc. Strip Cards", the 1931, and 1928 (like yours). The cards you have are basicly blank backed 1928 W502 cards.

"1928 W-UNC. Strip Cards" same checklist as the 1928 W502 (and related ice cream sets)

I have owned a few in past and remember that Bucky Harris, Roger Peckinpaugh, and Glenn Wright were among the ones I owned. What is interesting is that they are actually two different sets. If you notice your card on the right has a creamy white color to it and is printed on a glossier card stock (similar to E121 type cards) but retains the same thickness. The Grimes is a more sepia color and resembles the regular W502 cards. So, in my opinion from having owned about 5-10 of each type, these are two distinct sets manufactured in completely different ways and on different paper stock.

Hello Rhys,
The card stock on the Grimes is twice as thick as the Coveleski card. The Grimes is Caramel colored and has the same thickness as my York's. The Coveleski is white with the same stock as a W502 I have.

I misspoke on the thickness as I do not have any currently, I was going off of memory so I made a mistake there. However, I have had this conversation with other collectors before about the differences in paper stock and it is very obvious when holding the two cards that they are part of completely different issues. I am sure you agree currently having examples to compare side by side that the likelihood of these being from a single issue is remote. I remember distinctly that the white cards have a slick appearance and feel and the others are very grainy and course like W590 cards or something.

Rhys,
I never had a doubt about your 1920's knowledge. I've bought some of my favorites from you over the years. I think the Grimes is a 1927 York Black back, no other set has picture quailty & paper like it. The Coveleski is either Tharps or W502 according to paper and higher picture quality than other 1928 issues. Would be nice to have more to compare.
