Great iconic 55's Patrick!! Congrats on closing in...

I'll keep the 55 theme going, just got this back from SGC...I wonder how long this card was stapled to the kids wall? I love this card...it's my favorite of all the Jackies...

Wow, those are nice 55s!

I had a great mail day yesterday, including this 1972 Nolan Ryan. I've wanted an early career Ryan card, and I was thrilled to see this one once it arrived. And this 1967 leaves with only 6 cards remaining for my Kaline set.

I know, I know, this Joe D. isn't quite postwar---so how about post WW1?
Generally speaking, I'm a postwar guy and opted to share it here. This is a card I never thought I'd own so I'm pretty happy. I nearly forgot Mr. Parnell, #1 card in the '50 Bowman set. One pic is small, the other huge, I'm just happy I was able to get them both here.

Finally got the 63 Bouldin rookie card #496 to finish my Senators run from 52 to 71. This last one was hard to get but I finally got a nice one to complete the run.

I also learned about Dalkowski's history while I was looking for Bouldin and I guess that contributed to the trouble getting one.

Regardless the Bouldin Senators Rookie is in the book now!

Cheers,

Butch

Nice card of Dalkowski/Bouldin. That card is on my wanted list for Dalkowski's sake, but I haven't been looking for it with much vigor. His is certainly an interesting and tragic story. What might have been.

If you haven't seen his story, watch this - The Steve Dalkowski Story.

It sure made for a hard time to find one within my range. This one fit the bill, the others I have seen are stratospheric for sure.

Thanks for the link,

Butch.

Not really interested in upgrading my 1953-55 Dormands but I had subbed what I thought would be at minimum a 6 to SGC on Gil Hodges and it came back a 4.5. Now that I am obsessively looking for the remaining 2 cards to complete the set, I did find a Gil SGC 8 that was too good of a deal to pass up. Again, wouldn't care except this card comes with such a cool back story having an 8 is pretty cool.

For those who don't know the story...the quick of it at one time this card was considered one of the rarest post-war cards of them all. These were produced for the players to hand out, and then some were made for sale at Yankee stadium. The old theory was that Gil threw his away and only a few survived. Apparently the card was selling for 5 figures at one time, IF one came available. When the maker of the cards passed away, the family was cleaning out the basement...and found Gil's lot of 500 in untouched condition! They were then sold at auction, all to one bidder, who then proceeded to sell to the hobby. The poor folks that shilled out big bucks to have this card now found their card worth less than pennies on the dollar. Feel bad for those guys, but so it goes. I now have 2! haha....

Great looking cards! We have similar taste. I picked up the 56 Ted earlier this year, and I should get the 56 Koufax in the mail next week!

Picked up my eighth different graded 1973 Topps #615 Schmidt Rookie Card. (Gee, perhaps it's time to start attending Card Collectors Anonymous meetings. )

It's newly graded, so the PSA 5 is nothing short of silly, as their only tool these days is a hammer. Paid a decent amount to grab it, because this guy looks too seriously great to 'only' be deemed a five...

Will soon be added to my 'Schmidt Rookies for Trade' thread, if anyone is interested and has nice stuff to trade. (The toning is not on the card, just the result of the camera.)

1949 Hage's Artie Wilson. The back story on this card is interesting. Per Wikipedia:

Wilson played for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League from 1942 to 1948, where he was considered the league's best shortstop, and was named the starting shortstop of the league All-Star team seven times from 1944 to 1948 (missing out only in 1945, when he was beaten out by Jackie Robinson). During Wilson's time with the Black Barons, the team won the league championship in 1943, 1944 and 1948, advancing to, but never winning, the Negro League World Series. In 1948, the New York Yankees purchased Wilson's contract, and he was assigned to their Newark Bears minor league team; but since his salary would have been less than he was making with Birmingham, he negotiated another contract with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. The Yankees protested to baseball commissioner Happy Chandler, who voided Wilson's Padres contract. The Yankees then sold Wilson to the Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League, where he was the team's first black player and the roommate of Billy Martin. With Oakland, Wilson won the PCL batting title with a .348 average and also led in stolen bases with 47. In 1950, he led the PCL in runs with 168 and hits with 264, helping the Oaks to the 1950 PCL championship.

The card is from the nanosecond Wilson was a Padre.

Here is a snapshot of Wilson in action in 1949:

Newly graded is quite the joke indeed. I recently picked up a ‘71 Munson in a PSA 5, also newly graded with a 7- serial number. After examining closely, I just busted it. There was nothing preventing it from equaling at least a 6 with PSA, even fairly recently. Their tools apparently are just hammers anymore and numbers they throw at the wall to see what sticks…
