Default Rare Willie Mays Acquired

1973 topps candy lid proof.

0 graded by PSA
1 graded by SGC

Does anyone here have it?

I seen a Hank Aaron similar to mine that’s a pop 4 sell for over 1000.

Anyone have any information about this set? And/or the proofs.

Congrats, man. I don't know much about the proofs, other than I'm assuming they are precisely what they're called. There often seems to be a handful of proofs for any given oddball set that are running around out there.

It does look like the 1973 to me. The 1972 was a test set without the pink border for Mays, whereas the 1973 had the pink border. The 1972 also tends to be a lot harder to find.

I have both in my Master Mays set, here:

https://www.psacard.com/psasetregist...timeset/290520

PSA also has a writeup on the 1973 set, here:

https://www.psacard.com/cardfacts/ba...andy-lids/4774

I'm sure there are probably a few other threads around here talking about both the 1972 and 1973 sets. Looks like there's at least one here:

https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=217202

And another here:

I have a set of the Lids, and unopened Tub, and this proof of the display box, but no proofs of individual Lids. I do have a full set of progressive proofs of the 72 Lids. The 72 Lids are tough stuff

This group never fails to amaze me! Thanks all for the information. I’ll send it in for grading and put it away with the rest of
My mays.

Thanks everyone!

Yes. It is a progressive color proof. Missing at least two colors. I was able to pick a full set of them several years back. Another poster here has a more complete set of the 72 proofs

Default Did someone say 1972 Candy lid proofs?

As has already been mentioned - the 1972 finished lids are incredibly tough to find. Proofs for either set are also seldom seen (and sometimes contain marks from the printer reflecting changes to be made). The ones in the attached pic are available - PM me if you would like to discuss.

I am actively buying and selling vintage sports cards graded and raw. Feedback as a buyer: https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=297262

I am accepting select private consignments of quality vintage cards (raw or graded) and collecting "want" lists for higher end ($1K+) vintage cards.

Very cool stuff being posted. The OP Mays of course is a ‘73 with the color on the front and the red stars in the back. The ‘72 examples have the green stars on the back.
