Default August Pickups!

I posted this today at the tail end of last month's thread, then realized it was August.

I'll kickstart August with this one. Thanks for releasing this one back to the wild, Matt.

A beautifully centered Aaron rookie card and PSA 10 Mantle. What a start to the August thread. I'm sure there are going some some incredible posts from the National so post em' up. Congrats Sean and CW two incredible cards.

Thanks guys I had been looking for a little while too. Can't have a 51 Mantle without a 51 Mays, right?

And Sean, that's awesome. The bump from 9 to 10 probably adds about 1000% to the value of that card. Did you buy it in a PSA 9 at the show?

Glad you are loving the Hank, CW. Always a thrill to see those three white sides look of even thickness with minimal tapering.

The Ted was bought raw from a great board member and came with a wonderful story and even a picture of Ted signing that very card-- was sure it would holder, which I wanted for protection long term. Love the provenance (it's my only auto card) and also that it's on a card with a clear image.

The 76 Brett is kind of a freak for its centering and focus combo. Liked it better than the strong 8 with which I recently parted ways. It concedes some PD and honest corner wear; it was another raw beauty from Sean that recently graded out at the show. I can make out details on this focused examples, such as the texture of his cap and skin tone, which I couldn't discern on the two 8s I've had prior. Certainly wouldn't look out of place in a 7.5 holder; they have become incredibly harsh lately, no doubt a good business move, however unfair to the cards Tangentially the Roberto looks way more like an 8 to me, but happy to have the card for cheaper than I would have graded it!

And this one is a little off topic for this section, but quite excited about it. Strong centering for the card, along with correct registration.

Nice Jordan. That's actually the only basketball card I own (only a PSA 8). I was a huge fan as a kid.

Matt,

That 76 Brett is really, really nice. I have a loose set and probably upgraded 10 times since I first tried to put it together back in well....76..... I don't mind the O/C side to side so much as those stupid diamond cut and tilts...bleh!

Thanks, Ricky. The card is a beast to find with eye appeal. Sharp corners might get one into an 8 or even 9 holder, but even then the graders don't seem to penalize them as much as they should for poor image quality and tilt.

Jesse, I was a huge fan as a kid as well-- could not help but admire how he went about his mental and physical domination of the competition. Saw him dismantle my beloved Knicks so many times... The man was unstoppable, truly.

Now back to staring at the new Mick from The National, before he goes to the bank!

Default My latest pick-ups are scum compared to the other cards in this thread...

...but I still love them. A few rookie additions. The Hernandez mini was in a PSA 7 Holder. The Fran Healy was in a PSA 8 holder - and was my first time breaking into the new holder - needless to say - the Healy is now NM, probably. The Darrell Evans will not be cracked out, because I've learned my lesson: the new holders are a pain to crack open.

Not nearly the National haul I was hoping for but still not too bad. I was a little gun shy but managed to pull the trigger on a few things. It's always nice to add a few centered Micks to the collection and it was a blast just being there browsing.

The Brett was a MattyC style add. He clearly influenced my taste in cardboard growing up. For $14, how can you go wrong?

While we are showing some off topic Natty adds, this one was bought in a BCCG holder and crossed at the National to an SGC 8. I was thrilled since I paid 6-7 money for it

Default Nice pickups..

Matt, Todd, Greg nice cards.

I especially love the 57 Williams card. Funny story, I won that same card in a poker game almost 20 years ago. The guy (didn't know him well) lost a lot of money and asked me if I wanted his Ted Williams card for $1000. I told him I'd give him $200 for it. He was pissed and threatened to rip the card up before he'd sell it for $200. Long story short he ended up selling it to me for $200. About five years ago I had it graded (PSA 5 I think) and sold it for $140 a short time after that.

Greg, always fun buying cards in person at a show, especially the National. Great Mantle cards!

Yes, it was. Bought it earlier this year. Was a tough one to put in the sale pile during my Great Collection Reorganization/Reprioritization, LOL.

Ya'll left me in the dust long ago, but here's one I've wanted for a while. My constraints were no major problems + under $50. I am very happy with it.

Nice Aaron! I love the pic on this card. One of Hank's best cards, but very under appreciated IMO.

Thanks, guys, for the kudos on the 1955 Bowman Hank Aaron. I have to admit that "Color TV" tag at the bottom accentuates the bad top/bottom centering so many of these cards already have. I really was happy to find this one at a decent price. I bought it raw and plan to keep it raw but I tend to think this would be one of my few (or only!!) cards that--as you sometimes say--presents nicely for the grade.

Very Nice cards. I should have waited for a Mays centered like that but I was happy with the card and deal I got.

not sure how I missed your mays, but just went back and looked...I think it's a great looking card and would put your centering in the top 98th percentile. she is an absolute beast to find in anything that can even be described as a "centered" card!

seriously!
