Default Cancelled UPS stamp on signed ball?

What does this mean? I have seen it a couple of times. A form of authentication? This is a Ryan signed ball.

You typically see something postmarked on the date of a notable event or anniversary.

This is common with postal covers and I have seen it also on lithographs on occasion. I have never seen it on a baseball. Strange and not desirable in my opinion, but apparently someone thought it was a good idea.

Here is another one, IMO I don't like the stamp on the ball

MY guess is that he was signing at a show that day and/or that it was the anniversary of him getting 383SO. Interesting way to try showing that it was signed on the anniversary.

Except it doesn't really, because the postmark doesn't affect the signature. That would tie the signature to the ball on that date, but it would look awful.

Doing this was really popular when they came out with "new" 2 dollar bills in 1976. And of course, there are loads of covers for events.

I'm not sure what I think about the stamp on a ball. It's pretty strange, which I like, but it also doesn't make much sense and doesn't look good.

You will find those on Cal Ripken autographed baseballs also.

I believe they are from the old Scoreboard company.

I’ve dealt with a few of these balls. If I had a choice between one with a postmark and one without I would take the one without. It may turn off some potential buyers who just want a plain ball with an autograph. I don’t think it adds anything and in some cases can take away.
