Default Norfolk players from Maryland School for the Deaf photo

Posted By: Keith

Hey guys,

This forum has been awesome so far. Being a football collector and not knowing much about vintage bats, etc, I am learning alot.

I posted this photo on the regular forum about a month ago, looking for help with ID, and Joshua nailed it in his Maryland School for the Deaf suggestion.

I contacted the school, and they definetly confirmed it was of their baseball team. Refreshingly, the school has a great interest in their history, and I have received approximately 20 emails from one of their faculty members discussing the photo.

The photo turns out to have 3 players in it that went on to be long time teachers/faculty members at the school. 2 of which were so respected by the school that they named an athletic field and gymnasium after.

The young boy in the back row holding up a plaque is named George Henry Faupel, and after graduating he taught at MSD for 37 years. The school sent me 2 school newsletters; 1 having an article about Faupel and it contains a cropped photo of him as a child at the school - and the photo of him is from the very baseball photo I have.

The young man in the front far left with the catchers equipment is Harry T Creager. The young man with the baseball next to him is Harry Benson. Both men taught at MSD after graduating (Benson for 48 years!), and Creager was a lont time athletics coach.

Harry Creager was a very good catcher in his day, as was Benson a respected pitcher. There newsletters mention that during their playing days they played for other local teams. Also after graduating (and while working as teachers) they both played baseball with Norfolk of the Virginia League. I thought I would get lucky when I saw the other post, but I didnt recognize them in that photo, and I think they would have played earlier than 1910.

Sorry for my long post, but my real question here is how I can go about finding when these 2 players played for Norfolk. Research hasn't gotten me very far yet.

thanks
KJ

The names Benson or Creager do not come up on a Spalding Guide search for the Norfolk team.

This link is an invaluable tool for researching baseball history:

btw I enjoyed learning about your photo. To me that is what this hobby is all about.

My retired, hearing neighbor was a lifelong administrator and sometime athletic coach for deaf schools. He said Dummy Taylor (1900-8 NY Giants) umpired some of the deaf school baseball games. He said all the kids were well aware of who was Dummy Taylor.

Keith,
Love info. like this...glad I could help. Finding out about an old photo is always a plus and I have a feeling it happens rarely. Good luck with your research.

Joshua
