Default If you like Old Jerseys, Look What I just Got in!

Got in some really old Jerseys and wanna show them off!

Not sure what I wanna do with these, but I felt like taking some hall of fame photos as they inspired me haha.

Up first is a realllly cool piece. (I will add more jerseys and photos throughout the day!)

ANTIQUE BASEBALL

NEW EGYPT BASEBALL GAME USED JERSEY worn by SPENCER "PENNY" HARTSHORN (1920-1992)

Spencer was a New Egypt High School baseball member and semi-pro baseball player. He was also the founding member and past president of the
New Egypt Little League, and was an umpire with the Mercer County Umpires Association.

This came with a Photo to photo match the jersey to as well as a nice note card.

Also came with his cleats!

UNIFORM SPECIFICATION

HEAVEY WOOL ZIPPER JERSEY SIZE 44-46,
JERSEY LENGTH 27 1/2", PANTS SIZE 34
JERSEY IS IN EXCELLENT GAME USED CONDITION
JERSEY ZIPPER CLOSES 7/8 TO BOTTOM.

Stephen, the photo does not match the jersey, IMO. Lettering is off, the jersey is a zipper down while the photo appears to be button down, and the jersey has stripping that does not appear in the photo.

Since you have the photo in hand, you can probably compare better than I can.

Be careful Stephen, these draw little comparison to the 1910/11 CWS jerseys, or 1913/1914 Pirates jerseys, in my opinion. Those jerseys had a small sun collar attached to the top of the colored placket, around the neck, I believe. An important feature when evaluating jerseys.

Good luck, and nice pickups. Enjoy.

Keep them coming Stephen, nice items. Be careful on your dating and being too exact. The Princeton Prep one is probably later than 1921 given the time frame they would have been likely to put a number on the back. Try not to be too exact on the Thos E. Wilson as could be early/mid 20s too. Not sure how you come up with 1919-1920 on the Army, nor 1910-1919 on the NAAW.

Are you gonna try and trade them up for a Mantle game worn jersey from 1952?

I saw this lot and it was a good deal no matter the seller or details. Price per jersey puts you in good shape Stephen. Great display pieces.

Thanks I am not too familiar with the market, but for the price I figured I could learn a lot from these. Thanks for the comment.

Just curious, but why do you buy so much stuff without really having any knowledge? It seems like the last few weeks you've posted a number of pickups that you have no clue whether it's real or not or what it's worth. It's an interesting strategy so just curious. Cool jerseys. I used to live right by New Egypt. Brings back memories.

If I think it's cool and think I can make a few bucks on it I take a chance. These jerseys were priced right and looked awesome so I figured why not? I'm trying to do the dealer thing a little bit now and am learning on the fly but enjoying every moment of it. I do not believe I have asked value questions of late as I have subscribed to worth point which has been a fantastic tool. I seem to have a good eye and am able to pick up neat things that others enjoy as well. No harm in asking me though Chris. I appreciate the question

Sounds good. As long as you're enjoying yourself . Glad to hear you are making money in the process. My area of focus is vintage Mantle stuff, so feel free to shoot me a PM if you ever dabble in anything in that area. This are great looking jerseys and would look great in a man cave.

I dont believe you can call this Army without some more specific provenance. It is not West Point as their jersey's stated either "Army" or "West Point" throughout that time. If it is a unit, it will usually list the Unit on it like "4th AF" or "7th ID".

It may be an Army uniform, but I wouldnt accept that it is just because the seller said it was. I would need to have some very specific match photos to believe it is military from 1919-1920.

Your points are spot-on with regards to the attribution. However, there are plenty of examples of military used uniforms that lack markings (unit identification) applied specifically to jerseys, trousers or even caps. You are also correct that West Point and the Naval Academy both had their uniforms adorned with lettering to indicate their school or branch (depending upon the year, dating back to at least 1903 - which is verifiable through photographic research).

I too have questions surrounding this uniform. I believe that this a few decades more recent. Also, neither the army nor the navy manufactured uniforms but were rather supplied through contract resources (yes, I am fully aware of the Naval Clothing Factory). Baseball uniforms and equipment fell outside of the normal appropriations channels, especially during wartime. I would love to see close-ups of the buttons and the tag that reads "Manufactured by the US Army" if that exists on either the trousers or jersey.

The 'New Egypt' jersey doesn't correspond to the photo - I don't know that it matters, but thought I'd mention it (zipper vs buttons + trim)

I LOVE the maroon-trimmed jersey that you are calling 'high collar' - I haven't seen one quite like that.
