Default slabbing t206 question

Posted By: jackgoodman

I've read a lot of threads about GAI holders not fitting some cards well and that cards have a tendency to slip. My question is: If you had some high grade T206's that you wanted to slab, would you trust them in a GAI holder? Or is there a chance that the condition could worsen over time if the card moves around? Also, in your opinions, what cards would do best (be best protected) in a GAI slab?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Default slabbing t206 question

GAI's misshapen inserts have already cost me a decent T206 Willis that got so banged up across the top that it ended up crossing over 2 grades lower to SGC. My Williams Caramel Lajoie also is a rattler; fortunately, that card is so low grade already that it doesn't matter.

Default slabbing t206 question

Is it all their holders or do some years/types of cards fit better? ie Topps/Bowman's from the 50's?

Default slabbing t206 question

Posted By: Josh K.

Ive already bought a number of GAI holders with loose cards - I dont know if its all cards or not, but a sampling of the different sets that have had rattlers for me: T206, 51 Bowman, 67 Topps. I have never had one so bad that it slipped out of the insert as has happened to some others.

A while back, I emailed Mike Baker at GAI about the problem and he responded as follows:

"There is a tolerence each gasket has for any particular card, obviously
too much tolerence would not be good. If you would like to send back
the cards in question I would be more than happy to take a peak and find
a gasket that fits your cards better. We have over 200 different sized
gaskets to ensure we get the one that fits the best everytime. Let me
know what you would like to do and will go from there."

Good customer service, but I still decided to cross all of my cards over to SGC. There is absolutely no movement in their slabs.

SGC custom cuts their gaskets if they can't find one that fits. I have never had rattlers like with GAI. Too bad, too, because their holder design is nice, especlally the info on the top edge.
