Default T-206 Nap Lajoie Question (Tape Removal)

Posted By: joey

I just started collecting t-206s recently and I purchased a pretty good looking Nap Lajoie. I want to get it graded and had a question on that. The card is in great condtion, but has a piece of small piece of clear tape across the back. No one has attempted to remove this. Should I send it in with the tape on it, is there a way to remove it without harming the card, what will this do to the grade, what company would you recommend sending it in to? Just guessing I would say it would be between a PSA 5 and 7 without the tape. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Just included the pictures today!

Toluene reportedly does a good job at tape removal, but I haven't tried it - and I wouldn't try it until I practised with lesser cards. I believe it was an orange Beckett price guide from the '80s where I first heard of this method.

If you use toluene make sure to use a good mask and do not use around kids or pets. The fumes can really blow your mind and long term exposure can cause brain damage

Would they not score it higher and give it a marker? That seems crazy considering how nice this card looks, but then again I am new to the grading process and the t206 collecting.

Joey: if you would like me to fax you a copy of that article when I get home, then e-mail me your number. Toluene is a flammable and toxic chemical.

There is probably more recent written material available on this subject.

Default T-206 Nap Lajoie Question (Tape Removal)

Ive never tried it with t206s but Ive had success getting paper glued to cards off by soaking in water. If the glue on the tape is water based, you should be able to get it off with using only water.

You may be able to find posts on soaking cards successfully. If not, I can tell you how to do it, but I would first want someone to confirm that this can be done to t206s without damaging them.

As far as a higher grade with a mark, only psa does that. The other card companies will give it a lower grade. However, a psa 5(MK) will probably only sell for what a psa 3 sells for - so if resale is your goal, I would try to remove the tape. If you dont intend to resell and you dont mind the tape being there, then just send it to whichever company you think has the nicest slabs, best service, etc. and dont worry about the grade.

Default T-206 Nap Lajoie Question (Tape Removal)

Joey

My T206 Walter Johnson card graded much lower than I
expected, simply because there happens to be an almost
un-noticeable faint indication of "glue smear" on its
back. When I questioned the SGC grader about this, he
pointed it out to me under magnification.

So, my advice before you do anything, is if you can get
GAI (I know for that they preview a card for $5), or any
other Grading service, to give you an opinion before you
attempt to remove the tape. It's tricky business to undo
taped cards.

Please do not put any chemicals on your card. Especially a chemical such as toluene. You will, without a doubt, ruin your card. Toluene is an industrial strength petroleum based solvent. Never use anything other than distilled water to remove scrapbook/glue residue on your cards. Trust me on this one.

If you decide to try a chemical on your card anyway - you should understand that the residue will show under a black light and it won't grade anyway. That's if your card survives.

...and side, this card would not grade between a 5 and a 7, even if the tape were perfectly removed.

Also, based on the scan, it appears that someone may have cut the edges of the card in order to remove it from whatever it was originally taped to. The edges look slightly curved and/or sliced.

It maybe just me, but I dont see any paperloss on that card and do not see any curviture to the sides either. I recall following the auction and the card looked pretty good except for the tape.

no paper loss! I think the part you are referring to on the front as paper loss is just the tape where it wraps around. The only thing on it is tape. I don't think it is trimmed either!

Joey,

I would try soaking first. There's a current thread that tells you how. I think soaking is a longshot though in your case. If you try it be very careful not to pull paper off when trying to peel the tape. Steaming may be a better option. Regardless you'll likely have discolorization (the pros call it "foxing") due to the acids in the tape.

You may just have to live with it or send it to a professional (very expensive).

Good luck and keep us posted.
