Default Help needed on Fan Craze and Nat'l Game cards

Posted By: Tim Newcomb

Did anyone else see these on ebay a couple of weeks ago?

Got five of these cards today, and they look funky as hell. Scans looked funky but I was hoping it was just a bad scanner. These cards don't quite match the shape or size of the Fan Craze and Nat'l Game cards I own. The paper stock looks almost identical, however, and the cards do have an old look.

Does anyone know if there are reprints of these sets kicking around?

Seller did offer a 10-day guarantee on their authenticity......

Thanx
Tim

I'm 90% sure that the National Game card is fake - every real one that I have ever seen has been black and white printing and not that brownish color.

Can't help with the Fan Craze because I don't know too much about them.

I recall seeing that FC, it didn't look right to me and nothing like the graded Crawford that I have. I shied away from it.

The fan Craze you can tell better frrom the BACK (the red ones are a kind of muddy color in the reprints), but I never saw a Fan Craze with such a bad case of Jaundice!

I guess the Fan Craze was NOT a popular game (can anyone play it?), because the cards are frequently found in great shape...

Definitely agree that the National Game card is phony...for reasons given by other poster.

Agree that the color on the NG should be blacker. For comparison:

The Fan Craze also looks wrong as well:

Please post a scan of the back of the fan craze card.... If the lower left of the back looks tampered with be very suspicious (that's where the reprints say "reprint" in white)... the AL Reprints (for whatever reason) are not as readily available...

Also, and this is especially strange, certain cards were NOT reprinted in the NL reprint set generally available (including Hanlon as I recall, who was not yet a HOFer when the set was reprinted),

Based on the original scan above, I am sure that I also bought a nat'l game card from this seller. However, the scan above is not accurate. The sellers scan of the alexander that I bought looked just like the one above. The actual card is shown below. It is not that different in color from the picture of the nat'l game cy young pictured on the old cardboard website (also posted below for comparison). Both are sepia toned, not black and white. However, the corners are very wrong.

Yes, the corners are very wrong--and mine aren't sepia, either...

Thanks to all who responded-- seldom have I seen the board members so unanimous in their opinions

If anyone else was bitten by these, the seller has agreed to refund my money, so don't be shy about asking him.

Tim

The fakes are relatively easy to spot in these sets because of the corners, and to a lesser extent te color of print used, as was eluded to by earlier posters.

Whoever reprinted the set overdid the rounding of the corners (either purposely (to avoid people passing them of as real) or by accident).

I just got Dummy Taylor Fan Craze from the same dealer of yours. I paid 50 for it and it came out trimmed, and yours' trimmed too. Look at the bottom card, its not even. compare the back of your card to earlier post and u ll see alot missing from the bottom. Now I don't know if I should ask dealer if I could keep it for lower price.. How much should i offer on trimmed card? I collect Dummy Hoy, Dummy Taylor..

Hope this helps

Danny

There was a great thread on this very question about a week ago. In general the more rare a card is the more value it has as a trimmed speciman. I think for normal scarcity around 10%-20% of untrimmed value is in the ballpark...regards

Danny,

It's up to you, of course, but if the card is a reprint I wouldn't keep it for any price.

On the other hand--
If you thought it was authentic but trimmed, that would be a different story-- then anywhere from 10-50% of the untrimmed price might be reasonable, depending on scarcity.

The seller will refund (or at least he did for me)--

Tim

Not to bring up bad memories for those of you who purchased these cards the first time around, but this Joe Jackson looks to have the same problems as the fakes as noted in this thread.

Any chance that this card is also a fake and made it past PSA's experts?
