Default m101-4 Indy Brewing cards

Posted By: Zach

After winning the one in the link, I know its horrid, I have a question. I've seen a good amount of these and have noticed that most if not all have front damage from just a little or even to a bunch like the Connie I bought. Does anybody have any info on why ?
Thanks

I was thinking the cards were placed with the picture side or front against the glass bottle like a label. Once the beer was cold then taken out of the fridge and put in a warm area the bottle starts to condense and get wet on the outside. Since the moisture is all around the bottle possibly it would get all over the card causing it to rip while taking it off.

Hi Zach,

I can tell you exactly why. The damaged ones all come from a single set, once complete or nearly complete, that surfaced on ebay in March 2004. I bought several of these from a lovely lady from northern Illinois who had inherited them from her grandfather (I know, I know, but this one I believe). She had the following to say about the damage:

"Back in the early 1900's there were a lot of semi-pro teams and my grandpa played baseball. He had a business, but loved baseball. I am sure that my love started because of him. Anyway, he trusted everyone and let someone take these cards home with them. When tney were returned, the person left them in front of his business and it rained. That is what caused the damage. My grandfather was a saver. He saved everything."

The point I'd make is this: Indy Brewing seem plentiful right now because these damaged ones have been floating around. But except for this one set, there are very few examples to be found. I believe the Indy back is a good bit scarcer than many assume-- especially in nice condition.

Cheers,
Tim

There have been a few discussions on this subject of M101-4/5 back rarity. You'll find various opinions, including mine. No one really knows for an absolute certainty, however.

Tim

I bought the one I own about 12 or 13 years ago at a show in LA from John Spalding. He had lots of different backs for sale. They were all about the same price. I chose this one (Wilbert Robinson) because it was a beer company. John used to do LA shows and man did he have great stuff at reasonable prices (sigh). Got me into my first prewar exhibits, caramels, W517s and M101s.
