Henry,

I dont know why it rec'd such a low grade, but I wouldnt suggest buying anything from that seller - his feedback is pretty terrible and he doesnt accept paypal which will make it more difficult to get your money back if the item never arrives (which others have complained about).

Many of those negs left for that seller were from newbie ebayers who thought they were getting the six games pictured and not the one in the title. had they read the description they quite possibly would have known that.

with that said if I was looking for that card I'd want a better scan of the card (front and back)

What i did not like was how the seller states that if you are not happy with the purchase you have 2 weeks to return for a refund then goes on in the same breath also says: NO REFUNDS on graded cards.

Possibly a pinhole which gets a card an automatic 1 regardless of condition.

I saw that card also, but his feedback is crap and no PayPal. Check this listing out: 8746578651
It is $90 more but it is a 2 and he has 100% feedback & PayPal.

...paper loss on reverse...
...tons of creases...
...pin hole somewhere...

What is certain is that the reason for the 1 is not visible in the scan you provided. That's why 3rd party grading is so important for internet purchases. Otherwise, this seller could have listed this Matty as VG+, when he knows for certain that it isn't.

"Otherwise, this seller could have listed this Matty as VG+, when he knows for certain that it isn't."

This statement is so simple, yet so astute, that I think it deserved being repeated again.

It's exactly the reason why I support third-party grading, and am more than happy to accept their grading standards. A card doesn't get graded a 1 by accident, and yet the Matty looks very presentable.

Thanks for that brief moment of clarity on the subject of grading.

Al,

If you buy raw cards from reputable sellers it takes most of the guess work out of the grade applied. I will buy both ways and use SGC myself, grading companies help but aren't the the ultimate solution. Knowing who you are buying from is a a key to comfort in buying.
I personally never apply a grade to a card, try to describe it the best I can and I know there are others out there that do the same. I find this eliminates alot of hassle and questions.

Lee:

Most of what I buy is raw - some of what I collect, I like to have graded. Most of it, I submit myself.

But that limits me a bit, since I will only buy raw from reputable, honest sellers. As we all know, there are far more people who overgrade their cards, either because they're being deceptive or because they're stuck in the 80s.

When it's in a slab, I have a much more reasonable idea of what I'm going to get when I buy it on the internet.
