Default OT: Trivia

Ok, lets give this one a shot.
RA Dickey's back to back one hitters made this an appropriate time to ask:
What is the least amount of hits a pitcher has given up in 3 consecutive complete game starts?

Unless its a trick question the answer would have to be Johnny Van der Meer including his starts before and after his consecutive no hit games 21.2 consecutive innings without giving up a hit

Vander Meer is the right answer despite Mr Stinson screwing up.
He pitched a three hitter before the double no hitter.

Damn, you beat me to the punch! Let me return the favor.

Here are two other trivia questions:

1) Who allowed the second least amount of hits in 3 consecutive 9 inning games?

2) Who holds the record for most consecutive shutout innings?

3) Who holds the record for the most consecutive innings without giving up a hit? (Hint: It's not Johnny Vander Meer)

Mark,
Orel Hersheiser with 59 scoreless innings is correct.
Did you know that Hersheiser's 59 inning streak ended with the end of the regular season, but continued unofficially into post season. Orel actually offered to end it at 58 2/3 innings to tie Don Drysdale's standard that he set in 1968. Drysdale thanked Hersheiser, but said that baseball records were meant to be broken, and to set a new one if he could.

Another bit of related trivia.
Many people remember Don Drysdale's scoreless inning streak, but did you know that Bob Gibson had a 48 2/3 scoreless inning streak in 1968 as well. Ironically the streak ended at Dodger stadium vs. Drysdale if I remember correctly...

BTW, I added a third trivia question in my earlier post if anybody would like to try to solve it, just for fun...

Cy Young had some streak of no-hit innings surrounding his 1904 perfect game. Maybe someone can find the details, but it was something like 7 no hit innings to end the game before the perfect game, and 6 no hit innings in the next game after. It was some crazy streak like that over 3 games.

Cy Young's hitless streak was 23 innings.

Good guess, Shelly, Richard and Scott!

Dennis Eckersley actually pitched 23 2/3 hitless innings between 5/25/77 and 6/8/77 as a starting pitcher with the Cleveland Indians. I believe that Johnny Vander Meer went 23 1/3 hitless innings surrounding his back to back no-hitters in 1938. Vander Meer's streak broke Cy Young's and Eck broke Vandy's streak.

BTW, the answer to my first trivia question about who has the second least number of hits allowed in 3 consecutive starts where the pitcher went the distance is:

Dave Steib with 5 total hits allowed- 1988. Steib had two consecutive one-hitters where he went 8 2/3 before allowing one hit. In the third game he threw a 3-hitter. If anyone was ever destined to pitch a no-hitter it was Steib. I'm glad he finally got one in 1990 at Cleveland.
