Hi - I am new to the PSA message boards. I wish that I would have started checking them sooner. In March 2008, I bought this Gehrig card from an eBay seller (dunkindoughnuts2008). Just a few days ago, I received an email from another eBay user alerting me to the fact that several other people have alleged to have received counterfeit cards from this seller. After reading some message boards here and on Net 54, it appears that I may have a problem. Closer inspection of the PSA label as well as the side of the slab now cause me to worry that I too have been duped. The good news, if there is something, is that I still have the seller name, address and bank account information (since I sent him a wire payment). Please take a look - I would appreciate any of your comments.

Your card is the real deal but whether it has problems (trimming, wrinkles, retouching, etc.), I can't say based on the scans.

The card looks fine but you might want to get your bearings straight....This is the Net54 VBC Forum not the PSA board. We've been called worse though.....

This guy has fake cards. If this guy if from southern part of california his cards are fake cards in legit psa holders. You can see frost marks around the psa holders. Here is an old thread about the same guy. I bought a 1952 bowman mantle off him and i sent money to his bank account bank of america. he went by name jose hernandez http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1199793798/PSA+counterfeit+cards%21%21%21+Beware

Hey I put the registration number in on PSA web site and the card is legit.

Keep in mind you can't rely on that alone, since they will often have matching serial numbers. Although it is just a small security net this works with PSA and GAI. Fake SGC flips can use just about any number since it can't be checked online.

You will need to look at and become familiar with other variables such as fonts (key), alignment, spacing, font shades and the barcode to name a very few.

Just for kicks I posted a couple home-made flips a few months ago and nobody noticed. Don't remember the thread but one was put in upsidedown in a cracked slab. I believe it was a Gil Hodges flip.

This is why it was mentioned that this may quickly become the scam of the future and we (and the grading companies) should prepare and learn as much as we can now. This does not apply to organized professional forgeries but for the individual scammers.

Just my 2 cents.

Kevin

edited to say that the flip mentioned is in the thread linked in the post above.

The font on the label looks too large. The front of the Gehrig looks odd and too white. The back while it has the red transfer you feel comfortable with looks a little odd. This would be a good card to send off to Kevin to have a look at.

On the label the vertical line of the L in Lou Gehrig is lined up directly below the vertical line in the 1 in 1933. Looking at PSA labels of various types and fonts an L is normally alligned to the left of the 1 in the date. The Lou Gehrig in the odd looking label is nearly as large as 1933 Goudey. On normal looking labels the Lou Gehrig looks more narrow because of the alignment. There's a fancy name in printing for the space a 1 or L would take up in normal printing like a PSA label uses, but if you made a label with Photoshop the Lou Gehrig would go where you put it.

The front of the card pictured in the auction is a reprint. The inner image has been cropped -- the red rectangle at the bottom of the card is too short top-to-bottom.

We've been through this on another thread with these cards: the font is slightly off on the flip. It's a fake.

"GUM" in the Goudey red bar is too close to the bottom border. 2nd "G" in Gehrig" is too close to the right border. Border looks too white.

here is a good card to compare it to.

Thank you for your comments. First, I apologize for mistakenly referring to this forum as the PSA boards. I originally intended to post in each forum but realized that I didn't have a CLCT ID although I am a PSA member. In any case, yes, the seller in question was Jose Hernandez. And I did wire the money to a Bank of America account. I am not sure what steps to take from here other than to send the card to PSA and get a final verdict on the authenticity.

I did email PSA customer separately. I got a response from an agent who simply stated that the serial number matched the card in question. I am not sure if she actually saw the eBay link that I sent her.

This is something that I noticed right away was that the 2nd "g" in Gehrig's name on the flip extends all the out to the "ey" on Goudey in the line above it. Where as with the other example scanned(FKW's) the 2nd "g" stops short. I then decide to look further and there is a PSA NM-7 example of this card on Ebay and it differs from the OP's link. It also has the shortened version of Gehrig's name.

Just my observations & if the card and flip is a fake, I hope that all works out well for you.

Jantz

Edited b/c I'm still trying to teach my fingers how to spell correctly

The card looks good to me and no Leon, there is nothing worse than being called the PSA board!

It is never advisable to wire money to anyone you don't know. Western Union (but substitute your bank name for similar warning) explicitly tell you this on their site:

"Remember, Western Union recommends against using the Western Union Money Transfer®
service to pay for online auction purchases. It is important to note that Western Union does
not offer any type of purchase protection or escrow service and is not responsible for the nonreceipt
or quality of goods or services."

They're recommending not using their own service for auctions. You won't get a stronger caveat emptor than that.

Bill

Of the seven positive eBay feedbacks that "dunkindoughnuts2008" has received, five of them are for fake/reprinted cards. Some, like the bogus PSA 8 1956 Mantle he sold, aren't even close to NM-MT condition.
