Default Show Off Your Best Manager Card!

Love the threads with scans and was wondering if you had any "manager" cards you think are good ones. Do you think manager cards should be respected at the same level of player cards? Thanks for sharing.

Do player / managers count? This card shows "3B" on it, but Little Napoleon was also managing the Giants at that time too. Behind only Connie Mack, McGraw is the second winningest manager ever.

Default Deal

What is the deal with player/managers? Especially in the pre-war era....A little history lesson would be appreciated. I think it was a pretty common thing? Would the manager just insert himself whenever he felt he could benefit the team kind of thing?

No favorite, but I have a favorite team, despite current ownership, and here are two of the team's best managers:

Default Talk about a slump

With a posture and demeanor such as shown, it doesn't look as if James Fox could have been much of a leader as a manager

Default In 1924, the "Boy Manager," at age 27 and in ...

his FIRST year as player-manager (he played 143 games at 2nd base), led the Washington Senators to their ONLY World Series Championship. Stanley Raymond "Bucky" Harris even hit 2 home runs in the 1924 World Series (he had only 2 HRs out of his 1,297 regular-season hits during his entire major league playing career)! It don't get no moh betta than this!!

Bucky's Senators repeated as A.L. Champions in 1925, but unfortunately lost the World Series to the Pirates in 7 games. However, he did win a second World Series Championship when he piloted the N.Y. Yankees to to victory in 1947.

Default In 1933, at age 26 and in ...

his FIRST year as player-manager (he played 152 games at shortstop, batted .309, and led the A.L. in doubles), Joseph Edward Cronin led the Washington Senators to their last A.L. Championship. It don't get much moh betta than this! Although Cronin batted .318 in the World Series, the N.Y. Giants prevailed.

Cronin later managed the Red Sox for several years, leading them to the A.L. Championship in 1946, and subsequently served as President of the A.L. for a number of years.
