Picked this up at an estate sale. The writting is done in pen (not a ball point the type that scrapes the paper). No other sport stuff just very expensive ugly sculptures. 2 Questions 1st how does it look and think it's worth sending in to be authenticated. alright where should I send it. Thanks Dave

Hmm, first thing I think of when I hear 'Estate Sale' is 'fake.' Just an ebayer's reflex.

In any event, I don't feel entirely comfortable with it...'Babe' especially, a bit hurried, sloppy and strung out. Somewhat of a 'scratchy' quality to the last name. (Please excuse my rather non-technical terminology).

The other thing is the inscription, awfully scarce piece if it's good; can't help but raise an eyebrow at the mere presence of such a notation long before today's stat-happy autograph hobby.

Could it be possible that this is some sort of premium, similar to the old secretarial Sinclair Oil balls? Can't think of any such thing off the top of my head, it's just a thought.

Anyhow, if one is dealing with vintage baseball, I would recommend Richard Simon...

I would think that Ruth would normally personalize something like this. Maybe the photo itself can be checked, paper type, etc. any markings on the back?

Something about it doesn't look kosher. I'd ask Richard Simon, though.

That is Ruth's handwriting.

Now the bad news: It's a well-known facsimile.

Hope you didn't pay too much.

The "Real Estate" thing always gets me. I go to quite a few of them and despite the fact that apparently the Babe signed a single ball for every child in the 1930's, I have yet to discover anything like that. David is 100% correct and these reprints can often be found on ebay for as little as one dollar.

David is correct,it is a well known facsimile.
Between this picture and the Ruth - Gehrig Barnstorming facsimile there are a lot of people out there who have been taken.
I know of incidents where flea market dealers have doctored these pictures to make them look old and have trapped buyers who in turn thought they were making a steal of a deal.

Thanks for all the help. I will have to take it out of the frame to see it better but looking thru the glass with my loupe it looks like a real signature(scraped paper high and low spots). I paid $50 for a nice framed print that I can have fun with and try to research.
Thanks again Dave
