Default This one takes it all....51 mantle SGC 84 goodwin

This card is at $13k and it looks like a 5! The back scan looks like a 4.. Rounded corners, This might be the biggest over grade on a high profile card that I have ever seen. What in the hell are these people thinking?

When rough cuts extend into corners, as appears to be the case on the worst of the corners here, it's a tough call how to grade.

Peter- I know you are kidding. Do you actually think this card looks like a 7, or for that matter, a 6?

Default 1951 BOWMAN Mantle

I haven't seen this card, but I've seen many 51B Mantle cards in my time.

The Mantle (#253) card was situated at the uppermost left corner of the 72-card Hi # sheet. And, when Zable Brothers (the
firm that printed these cards) made their 1st cut of this 72-card sheet, a rough cut resulted along the top (horizontal) edge
of the Mantle card.

There are a good number of Mantle cards out there with this rough cut that have been graded higher than you would expect.

Ted- I agree about the rough cuts, but I was talking more specifically about the corners and the reverse....

Was thinking the same thing, some of these prices are just beyond crazy, the 53 Whitey Ford?!?! WTH? Wouldn't you rather have a PSA 3 52' Mantle? Also the Goudey Foxx, I almost pulled the trigger on one at the national that would have graded a 3 for $250.00. Illustrates to me how grading has made people literally lose their minds. Unbelievable. You could probably have a large portion of the Goudey set in VG with no creases for that kind of money. What would you rather have? Is just non-sensical. I know many on here disagree. I'd rather have 20-30 cards that are a solid copy with eye appeal and no creases in a 3-4 Grade, than one PSA / SGC 8-9 of a mid level star like Whitey Ford. Am I crazy?

I wanted to post scans of this card, but the auction is over so maybe it's not even worthwhile. There are so many PSA haters on the board, and so many avid SGC supporters, this is a card that I don't see how in the world SGC could make a point for the grade given. I would even say this if the card received a grade of 80, even 70....Ridiculously over graded...

Rough cuts aside, I see a slight registration problem on the front, and some schmutz on the back.

Jason,

FYI, you are certainly not crazy, but neither are the collectors who crave high-grade cards. To each his own, and while I also seek strong eye appeal "Vg" to "Ex" cards, I could never criticize anyone for what their taste (and budgets) deem desirable. Always remember..."beauty is in the eye of the beholder"!

Sincerely,
Joe T.
