Default E106 vs E107 scarcity

Posted By: leon

A fellow board member and myself were having a discussion today (go figure) about scarcity of the E106 American Caramel vs the E107 Breisch Williams cards. We thought it would be interesting to see what other board members think. So, without reference to desirability or value:

1. Which do you think is more scarce, E106 or E107?

2. Which have you seen more of for sale?

thanks for your valued opinions....moderator dude

Both are tough, but I have seen complete sets of the E106s. The E107 is four times the size but I understand there are no complete sets.

According to my experience, which is limited with these two issues, E107s are far tougher to find, period, let along in vg or better.

I never used to see e107's for sale until the last few years...I guess I wasn't looking that hard though. E106's are kinda tough but I don't think nearly as tough as e107's. I wish my 106's weren't trimmed?!?! Bought em from a reputable dealer's catalog 10 or so years ago.

I stand corrected. I would agree that there is more interest in E107s, though, because of their year of issue, and less interest in E106 because you can find the same poses on other caramel issues.

I still own all your cards!

I am sure E-107's are tougher overall as back in the early 90's you could find the 106's in small quanity without too much effort. Heck T-bob and I sold a bunch of them on e-bay a few years ago like dummies that are just absorbed by collectors 9like most things) out of the market now~

a.k.a .....dagger in my groin. You may own several,
yes but back then , i dont recall a hoard of e 106's.

Bruce -desirability probably does have a huge effect...
good point.

For those who havent expierienced a e106 ,they have
similar gloss as the Coupons, Kotton, etc...

edited cause I spelled gloss - gloos ,y'all know what
GLOOS is right ?

i am quite sure my numbers are a bit skewed due to my interest in the E107 set. i have had nearly 400 E107's(which may be some kind of record) and probably had only 6-8 E106's which also come just as low grade as E107's. that being said. i don't think there is any comparison in popularity of the 2, E107's are highly desirable to a large percentage of the collectors, while E106's probably have a lukewarm following.

I've seen more E107s for sale than 106s over the last year or two, which is as long as I've been paying attention.

In the past 3 months on EBAY and major auction houses there have been 6 E106''s and 17 E107's sold in single lots. There was also a few multiple card lots of 107's that sold recently. Based on that the 106's are rearer but the 107's sell for about 200 times more.

Default E106 vs E107 scarcity

That was my point when I started this (that E106's are pretty darn scarce). I have only been collecting about 8-9 years (rather addictedly) and have seen far more E107's for sale and otherwise. I am not one of the old timers so don't know about 30 yrs ago. I do know what I have personally seen in my endeavors though. I have personally never seen a complete E106 set. (nor an E107 set either, obviously). I do agree that the E107's are far more appealing and obviously way more expensive but that wasn't the point of the thread. So of the collectors on the board I wonder if, in all of our collections together, there are more E106's or E107's? I know my thought...though it wouldn't be a popular one....thanks for the input...

Brian is correct- there was a bunch that we sold a few years back, including a sharp Matty which I have always regretted. As far as hoards go, surely you remember a guy from Cincinnati (name escapes me but he was a really nice guy with a name like USMCsomething) who sold a ton of nice E106s on ebay 4-5 years ago and then dropped out of sight and came back about 10-12 months ago with the remainder which were beaters but he had another slew of them for sale.

I had almost half the e106 set in lower grade and sold many on Ebay 2-3 years ago including speaker, mathewson and other Hofers. Still have both Wagners, both Cobb's, Speaker and a Plank.

If you check previous threads,I'm the one who has requested scans of 106's.The reason being, that I had a friend with a hord of these in my collecting prime,(75-79).I was lucky enough to aquire a few of these wonderful cards. All I had in those days were publications like the Card Collectors Bible to nail down what set these cards were from.Since then I've sought out the early candy cards. In my opinion the 106's are more rare (for sale on open market)than any other E set.Again, just my opinion.Leon and Ben,you're bringing back good memories !!!

Some of you may recall that early in 2005, there was an impressive number of lowgrade E90-1 and E106 American Caramel cards on ebay sold by a seller from Ohio. In addition to the baseball cards, there were also a group of E77 which is a set of very rare boxing cards. The E77, like the E90-1 and E106, was distributed by American Caramel. Apparently, the cards belonged to the seller’s wife's grandfather and he really like American Caramel products.

Originally the seller did not even know what the cards were and listed them on ebay without the ACC designations. As you might imagine, many collectors contacted the seller in hopes of buying cards offline. When the seller found out how rare the E77s in particular were, he pulled all the cards from ebay.

Someone offered $15,000 for the group of baseball and boxing cards and the seller actually accepted that offer. He later reneged on the sale and decided to keep the balance of the cards for his grandkids to have a nest egg for the future.

Adam contacted the seller of the cards for information for his book, but the seller made it clear that he was a private person and did not want to disclose the information. Before talks broke down, this was the information that I gathered about that hoard of cards: there were approximately 125 E90-1s, 100 E77s, 100 106s, and a handful of strip cards. Adam bought a few boxing cards and I bought a few and they were all pretty lowgrade.

Here's the E106's I kept, came in a lot of 20 E106's, 30 e90-1's and about 100 strip cards W514, w516-1 and 2. Most where in various lower grades. Sold the remainder, just kept the e106's and the e90-1 Mitchell Cincy. These came from a local dealer in the Cincinnati area. Wonder perhaps if these were plentiful in the Ohio area when issued.

I can't claimt o have much experience with e106s, but I think part of the reason you don't see many for sale is due to lack of demand and high profile sales that you see with e107s. e107s are very hot right now. The huge prices realized tend to bring out cards that have been in hiding for a long time. e106s don't have much in the way of a following and they there have been no high profile sales to put the set in the spot light. When a few high profile sales happen and prices in general for cards in the set start rapidly escalating, you will start to see a lot more e106s on the market.

One more thought. There might be more total e107s, but ona per player basis, I am sure there are more examples of each e106 than each e107.

E106= (44)
E107= (0)

All of my E106's came from a man that lives in Ohio (Lee).

I purchased 170 different E cards from him in one transaction about 4-5 years ago. 102 of them were e90-1's.

I'm sure that a few members of this board bought cards from him.

I only have 1 E106, Crawford, no E107's. Always get out bid on any that come up. More publicity on the E107 cards, less E106 cards show up on ebay.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but from about 1980 through at least 2000, I believe I saw all of two E107s for sale. During the same time period, I saw a reasonable number of E106s. I can't say how many for sure, but certainly a few dozen at least. Obviously, I didn't see every E107 that was for sale, but this has always convinced me that E107s are beyond scarce.

Since 2000 (probably more like 2002), I've seen quite a few E107s for sale that have been chased out of their hiding places by high prices.

I only started back into collecting in about '96-'97. I guess I just don't remember all of those E106's for sale. However, now that I think about it some more, I don't take much notice when an E106 comes up for sale and I do notice the E017's, so maybe that's part of the reason my memories are a little exaggerated. At least it was a good debate. I have still seen more E107's for sale "recently" though. And no, that was not the original premise......regards
