Default Basball Gloves in the Original Boxes

This addition to my 1971 Pirate Collection was a selfish birthday gift to myself. This was the first ďrealĒ glove I had as a kid. I got it for Christmas in 1971. I was a military brat and lost it during one of our many moves. Itís funny as a kid I thought it was a thing of beauty. I really donít remember it being so tacky. This Rawlings 1971 World Series Gold Glove Award Special glove was endorsed by Roberto Clemente and Brooks Robinson. It was sold in stores from 1971-1974.

I had been tempted to buy one but never could find one in nice condition. I think I got extremely lucky when I picked up this one with the complete original box. I canít imagine it isnít one of the finest examples of this glove out there. In 2006 Hunt auctions sold one that didnít have the lid to the box. It is the only other mint condition version of this glove I have ever seen. It was well out of my price range. https://huntauctions.com/live/imagev...=501&lot_qual=

I know there are other beautiful more vintage gloves in their original boxes out there in your collections; I would love to see them. Share yours if you have one.

So much of that '70s stuff was so gaudy that I see a lot of it now, through the lens of nostalgia, as fun and cool.

Mike, in all my years of collecting gloves, I have never seen that box before. It's fantastic!

To see more boxes, go here: http://www.baseballglovecollector.com/gallery/ and type the word box into the main search box in the upper right. You'll get six pages of hits.

Default Wow!!

Mike that is an incredible find (if you ever want to sell or trade it - I'm interested). I own the glove and if I recall it is in pretty spectacular condition. I also own a Clemente Sonnett glove in the original box, but don't have access to post a photo currently.

Default Clemente/B. Robby Glove

Mike,

I was going to bid on the glove/box as well, but spent my money on another item. I really wanted it because of the box, since it pictures Brooks, but glad you came out on top.

Thanks everyone for the comments. If Howard doesn't already have the box and Jim hasn't seen it before it must be rare. Mark I honestly thought I would be bidding against you for this one.

Hi Mike,

You likely would have been bidding against me, but I had to sit this one out. Picked up a couple of pricey items lately (at least for me they were) and begrudgingly didn't bid. I've seen this combo a couple of times since I started collecting and it's one that's still on my want list for sure. I think you got a very nice deal on the glove since I know I would have paid more than the final selling price. Would love to see it displayed with the rest of your '71 Pirates collection. Very, very nice pickup.

I love the retro look and it's a fantastic addition to your collection, kudos!
