Default Any Good Golf Card Picks ups Lately?

Just checking as it has been really slow here on this board. There has been a lot of really good material on ebay, both graded and ungraded lately. A lot of PSA Jones and Hagen cards, many are the tougher large issues etc. Seems like the selling prices have been very cheap. In many cases 50-60% of SMR. This is a large decrease of just a few months ago.

I am Curious as to what others out there might think is the reason? Here are a few of my guesses/observations.....

1- Time of year?
2- Depressed Economy/market
3- Much material comes out of Europe and they are taking a beating recently
4- Too many folks spend to much on REA Auction!
5- Stuff is just overpriced?

Personaly I think it is a great time to buy, but like always if you have money to spend and stuff is seemingly going in-expensively, well then it seems like a good deal to you the buyer.

I for one have picked up a LOT of raw and graded stuff over the last few weeks, almost all of it items I did not own, such as Williards Chocolates, Ogdens cards in particular and a few other odds and ends.

I also noted that there seems to be some new folks hopping into the PSA Set Golf Card Registries. I hope that continues. It is always good to see some new collectors getting into golf cards and the opportunities it provides for me to meet new people in the hobby.

Dave,

Golf collecting seems to be such a thin market. I think that is the key.

I am sure the economy has pulled some interest out.... and pulling any interest out of an already thin market would = low pricing.

I don't think the time of the year has much to do with it.... we should be right in the heart of golf collecting season.

I am not sure the beating Europe is taking has much to do with it either.... but the very fact that most of the cool cards come from Europe does contribute to keeping it a thin market over here IMO.

I agree with you.... it is a great time to buy.

I recently picked up an Ogdens Old Tom. Looks like a PSA 7 by condition.... its just beautiful. Although, the very lower left corner looks to have been slightly touched up with black ink. What is pretty cool is the eBay seller listed it honestly and correctly - - - so I was able to pick up this beauty at a bargain price.

Default Great Card joe

Always nice to see an Old Tom Pick Up. I just have a PSA 4 of that card, would love to upgrade.

I recently just bought a 1902 J Morris, it is raw, so taking a bit of a gamble, but we will see!

Great Old Tom, Joe. I believe I was the underbidder on that one. Might it be possible to lightly scratch the touched-up corner with a fingernail to remove the pen / marker mark, then have it in its original condition? Just a thought...

And to keep the thread going with pickups, here are a couple of raw Cope's pickups of mine from a few months ago. Not the greatest condition but the price was right!

great Copes Scott. I love that set.

with the Old Tom... the ink probably could come off. I have to look at it with a loupe. It really is just a dot of ink / and possibly I could have it wrong and there might not be ink there at all (but it looks like it was touched up / like many of the Ogdens).

Picked up a 1901 Ogdens C Base PSA 7 John Graham last night...got bid up a lot at the last minute, but it is still the highest ever graded and it goes nicely with the PSA 7 and Braid I have from the numbered 1901 Ogdens.

I also picked up a bunch more raw 1902 Ogden tabs tonight. 8 to be exact...No morris or Vardon, but I think the most I paid was $15 for a card.....I mean, you can't hardly beat that.

Saw last night that a Sarazen Churchman Prominent golfers Small went for just $73....someone got a great deal on that card.

Golf stuff has been very reasonable lately....overall...and I am not complaining...just spending too much money

Nice pickups Dave.

I picked up a raw 1971 Barratt - Jack Nicklaus and a raw 1930 Drapkin Bobby Jones this week.

As soon as I receive them from across the pond - I will post scans.

Dave, I had my eye on that Sarazen PSA 8, but was out on Sunday and forgot to put in a snipe. When I saw it ended for only $73, I was not happy about forgetting to put my bid in!

Just got back from my Scotland trip! It was a great time.

Picked up a 1930 Pattreiouex Bobby Jones tonight looks to be decent and I was happy with the price. It is one of my all time favorite cards, I think I have 5 of them now!

Also picked up all of the newer issued Sportkings golfers. Love the artwork. I think I might also pick up the Goudey sports royalty cards of Jack and Tiger too, but some of the tiger cards are ridiculous expensive.

Did not find any tobacco card shops in St Andrews, but I did not look that hard. Wouldn't that be fun to walk into a place like that overseas.....

Anyone else with anything lately?

Default 1900 Copes Golfers Near Set

Hey guys - I haven't been on the thread in quite awhile so I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the summer. I picked up a near-set of 1900 Copes Golfers at the show in the UK back in April and just got the grades back. Quite a few PSA 2s with back damage but several in the 4-6 range and one 7 and one 8. For some reason, PSA didn't grade the narrow-cut cards though? Figured I would post them here to see if anyone is interested before I list them on Ebay. If your are, shoot me an e-mail and we can work something out. Thanks.

Dave,

I have an Old Tom Narrow Cut that was graded by PSA.
On the label its says PSA 3 MC and then says "Narrow Cut"

I have no idea why they gave it the MC qualifier - as the Narrow Cut is a legitimate cut. The people at PSA that I spoke with didn't have an answer either.

But - they should grade those cards for you -
You probably have to shoot an email to them explaining the situation, and I would mention my Old Tom as well since it is in the pop report.

Regards,
Joe

Yes, the narrow cut came that way straight from the manufacturer. For one of the cigarette packs they had to "cut down" the size of the cards to make them fit.

I recently picked up this card. It is German I believe and Richs Coffee. I can't find my golf card book for non tobacco cards, so if any of you could add a little light to me on this one I would appreciate it. I think the golfer on the card might even be Hogan, but I am mainly trying to determine the year of manufacture.

Thanks guys - I was surprised they didn't grade them after I saw the Morris on the population report. They're definitely 'standard' size for the narrow version. Will probably resubmit along with the other 'mechanical errors' I've accumulated over the past few months...

Here are some of my latest pickups......

1) Zweifel card game. I don't even know what this is. It looks cool, so I bought it.

2) Marsuma Ted Ray! - - PSA 5. looks like a 6 to me.

3) 1930 Drapkin Bobby Jones - - the grand slam year. Love this card.

4) 2002 UD Phil Mickelson - PSA 9. Sweet card. I like the positioning of Phil's auto better than most of the examples I have seen (better than the 10s I have seen).

5) 1971 Barrett Jack Nicklaus - this card is a 10 by condition. Maybe an 8 because of the centering? Don't know. Its basically perfect if not for the centering.

That Ed Ray is the nicest PSA 5 I have ever seen.

If I get around to it, I will post a bunch of scans tomorrow of recent pick ups.

Anyone have a clue for me on the Rich's Coffee Card year of make?

Thanks!

As Promised, here are some scans (sorry there are a lot of them)

First, The Ogdens Tabs, Man I have I been on a buying spree! These are the nicest of the bunch overall

Golf1

More Ogdens Tabs! These are a bit rougher, this Morris is not near as nice. The First card in the scan is an F Series T.T. Gray. The F series cards are tough!

golf4

How about more Ogdens! These are 1901 Tabs from the I base and then a number of cards from the numbered series.

Golf2

Some odds and ends, one more decent Ogdens tabs. The Churchman Large and the Marsuma Travis I am hoping will upgrade some PSA sets

golf5

Here are some graded Ogdens. The Vardon is from the tough F series. I was very happy to pick that one up!

Golf6

How about Some Willards Chocolates! Of course there is also a nice Jones rookie as well as a Spalding Hagen. It is rough but it is the stat back version and I already own a very high grade ad back version, so was glad to find a copy. It is one tough card!

Golf3

How about some newer stuff! These are from 1981 True Value Hardware. There are 13 golfers, (I did not scan the Babe Zaharias as this is already a long enough post.) I like the artwork and the backs have a continuation of the write up on the front.

Golf9
Golf8
Golf10

Finally picked up the Sportkings golfers. There are 6 so far from the newer releases, Jack Nicklaus and Henry Cotton will be in the new Series D coming out soon. I love the look of these cards.

Golf7

Another pickup from this week - the Millhoff Bobby Jones. Would prefer it not to be off-centered, but for $150 I'm happy to have this one! Corners are great and the centering isn't THAT bad!

Unfortunately all of the Ogdens I bought from one seller all turned out to be re-colored.....he also is unwilling to do anything to rectify the situation.

So....I may just sell them as a near complete set, or I might submit them one more time. PSA has made mistakes on these in the past, but I am guessing they did not here.

I really can't see on the majority of them any evidence of being re-colored, but I was a little suspicious on a couple of them.

The good news is the lesser condition looking ones still came back with a bunch of PSA 4-5 range stuff which is really good for Ogden's.

Be looking for the re-colored cards in an ebay auction near you. I am hoping to get half of my money back at this stage, and one thing is for sure, I will have it in MY auction description.

Ouch on the Ogden's, Dave. Please post when you will be selling them, as I would still be interested.

Couple of others worth posting. None were new or upgrades for me, but I might make a run at a second set of these, and couldn't pass them up for an average of around $35 per card...

Nice cards Joe. For some reason I just can't get enough of those Ogdens, so I appreciate seeing yours. I've got a trip upcoming to the UK; maybe I'll come across a find of them in my travels!
