Default OT: An all time line up just for fun, whos yours?

How about an all time batting order with a bench (15 players) of all time players, who would you pick and what would be your batting order? Remember its a team, you need to field a team and have back ups. Your the manager!

Here's my line up:

2 - Eddie Collins 2B
3 - Ruth - RF
4 - Ted Williams - LF
5 - Gehrig - 1B
6 - Alex Rodriguez SS
7 - Mike Piazza C
8 - Mike Schmidt 3B

Bench:
Johnny Bench C
Rogers Hornsby 2b
Honus Wagner ss
Rickey Henderson OF
Barry Bonds OF
Willie Mays OF
Jimmie Foxx 1B

Desiderata

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.

Default all time

I would really like to see how this lineup would handle modern pitching.

Cobb
Wagner
Ruth
Gehrig
Hornsby
Williams
Bench
Schmidt
Johnson

I would platoon Mays with Williams just because there's something wrong with an all time lineup without Willie Mays.

This is all about who I would want to see and not who is the best, no particular batting order.

J Jackson - OF
Musial - OF
Griffey - OF
Gehrig - 1b
J. Robinson - 2b
Wagner - ss
Brett - 3b
Gibson - C
Johnson - P

Cobb - OF
Ruth - OF
Banks - in
T. Williams - OF
B. Weaver - in
Mathewson - P

It seems a lot of us have similar lineups. Here's what my bench would look like:

1. Jimmie Foxx 1B
2. Jackie Robinson 2B
3. Derek Jeter SS
4. Brooks Robinson 3B
5. Yogi Berra C
6. Stan Musial LF
7. Ty Cobb CF
8. Hank Aaron RF
9. Walter Johnson SP

Not too bad for a bunch of backups, huh?

Just to be clear, that's not my lineup. Just the players by position. I'm still trying to figure out how the lineup would be constructed. Maybe something like this:

1. Willie Mays R
2. Ted Williams L
3. Rogers Hornsby R
4. Babe Ruth L
5. Mike Schmidt R
6. Lou Gehrig L
7. Honus Wagner R
8. Roberto Clemente R
9. Johnny Bench R

This is a fun topic, well done!

Wagner - ss
Cobb - cf
Aaron - rf
Musial - lf
Williams - dh
Gehrig - 1b
Brett - 3b
Cano - 2b
Bench - c

reserves

Ruth
Mays
Berra
Hornsby
Schmidt
Banks

Someone will always get left off a list like this one. A pitching rotation would be fun as well.

A five man rotation for me would be:

Koufax
Gibson
Feller
Ryan
Seaver

Obviously, my hope is that any lineup I set in fantasy, will be the greatest of all time on any given day.

These are always fun conversations. I prefer to list players that I saw perform in person more than once. I appreciate the past. My father raves about Feller, Doby, DiMaggio and Williams. My Grandfather had Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx and Johnson. Fortunately I had the honor to witness these guys, and would put this group up against the stars of any other generation. I truly believe they would consistently win as well. I'll leave Cobb, Hornsby, Gehrig, and Ruth to Bill James and the archeologists

Dh Rickey Henderson
2b Roberto Alomar
Rf Hank Aaron
Cf Ken Griffey Jr
3b Mike Schmidt
Lf Barry Bonds
1b Miguel Cabrerra
SS Cal Ripken Jr
C Johnny Bench

Roberto Clemente
Albert Puljos

Pitchers
Nolan Ryan
Greg Maddux

R. Henderson

Good idea. Okay let's do this.....

CF- Cobb
SS - Wagner
1B - Gehrig
RF - Ruth
C- J. Gibson
2B - Hornsby
LF - Aaron
3B - Schmidt

Bench:
Ted Williams
Willie Mays
Rose
Joe Jackson
George Brett
Goslin
Musial

Additional thoughts:
My sincere apologies to Mr, Aaron for batting him 7th.

Mike Schmidt's reaction to seeing the line-up card..."I guess that makes sense."

I wonder how Shoeless Joe would feel being on the bench while Josh Gibson, a black player, was starting. Goslin was from Jersey and probably would have been more comfortable with it. (I guess. He sounds like a fair man on the Glory of Their Times CD)

I sure hope Wagner is okay taking some pitches and I'm not screwing him up by batting him second. He was so used to clean up.

Was gonna leave off Hornsby because he always seems like kind of a dic* but his numbers make it tough to bypass him.

I need some more righties on the bench. Jackie R. may have to replace Musial.

Goslin I always viewed as an Eddie Murray type - when runs were there to be driven in, their focused intensified.

Fun stuff.

I don't understand the whole "lefty-righty-lefty-righty" lineup thing. It's a move designed to make the other manager potentially have to make decisions in later innings at the expense of having your optimal lineup in place. I just don't get it.

Tom C

p.s. Anyone who put Derek Jeter in place of Honus Wagner can eat my shorts.

I've been wondering about the Jeter thing as well. If you don't want Wagner because he's "too long ago", well that's up to you guys. But how does anyone take Jeter over Cal Ripken?

For me Jeter over Cal is easy. Nobody in the history of the game tries/plays harder day in and day out than Derek Jeter. This is coming from someone who used to hate watching him make those ugly spinning throws to 1st base that where no where close because he was trying too hard.

Really? Not saying Jeter is better than Wagner, but Jeter has 400 more lifetime hits than your buddy A-Roid, a 12 point higher career batting average, more Gold Gloves, and hasn't done steroids (I think). If A-Roid was such a great shortstop why has he been a 3rd Baseman for the last 10 years???

I picked Derek Jeter as my shortstop for one reason-he's a winner. He doesn't have to be the greatest shortstop in history to make my all-time team. At least that's the way I read the original post.
