believed to be the first example of a major league baseball team on a Postcard. Still puts a twinkle in my eye

I love the chicken-wire fence. The pitcher on the Santa Ana team is not too shabby.

no longer mine.... but here is my favorite image in the T200 set I once had (I just love the guys standing in the back)....

I've shown so many in the past, e.g. my Sporting Life set minus Detroit, that I thought I'd show something a little different this time.

This is actually one of my favorites. It shows the 1909 Springfield (MA) Ponies. The players include Harl Maggert who went on to PCL fame (or should I say infamy since he was banned for throwing games) and John J. Collins who went on to have a very respectable major league career and played for the 1919 White Sox.

Edited for typos

No World Series in 1904....therefore, I declare this Buffalo (AAA) team the mini "World Champions".

The Eastern League was the forerunner of the International League.

Harl Vestin Maggert is in the middle row, far left.

Maggert appears in e99 and many zeenuts from 1911 to 1920 when he was banned by the PCL Commissioner.

Nothing like throwing up a card from 1913 and having it the most modern one in the thread!
Leon, what is the paper stock like on the Bishop's? As thin as T201's, or CJ's, or thicker?
Great cards everyone!

They are on medium paper stock.......sort of like T213-1, Derby Cigar cards, but maybe a tad bit thinner than 1914 E145's......I wish they weren't so rare.....

According to the checklist on Jerry Spillman's web site, there were Sporting Life Composites available of Toronto for the 1902 and 1907 championship teams. I suspect this is going to be asking a lot, but is there any chance anyone has any examples to post?!

Regards,

Richard.

NB. Anyone have ANY 1900-1920 Toronto team cards to post?

Ask and you shall receive

Note that they are the Champions for 1903 which means they won in 1902. Also notice Ed Barrow in the centre position.

Wow Pro9, that's awesome! A few days ago, I didn't even know these existed (of Toronto). Thanks for posting it!

And if I may ask, what else is in that book? What's on the cover?

Thanks again!

Richard.

1901 Little Rock Southern League. 2nd place to Nashville in 1901. Players of note: John Skopec, top row second from left, played for Chicago AL in 1901 and Detroit 1903; J.R. Gilbert, middle row far right, played for Washington in 1898 and Pittsburg in 1904. Finally, William Popp, top row second from right, played for St. Louis NL in 1902. Mickey Finn (love the name) manager. Size 9 1/2 by 7 3/4.

hope Rob will post his amazing carl horner detroit team (1907?) postcard that he showed us at this past NYC Dinner...many of the poses are the same as their T206 cards, including the cobb (although it is the uncropped version, with alittle more of his body).

truly stunning, and possibly unique.

I'm lacking in the team card category. Best I can do are a couple of Burke stamped photo post cards. Also am posting a NYT rotogravure of the 1914 Giants, from the August 16 Sunday paper. On the day before the Giants had dropped their third straight to Boston , shrinking their lead to 3-1/2 games over the Braves who were in the cellar in July and who would go on to finish 10-1/2 games out in front. (In the corner is Charles Schultz's famous Peanuts cartoon: "Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?" And why couldn't Merkle have touched second?)

I will have to put these under a magnifying glass tomorrow for any makers marks in the lower right corner, my eyes are not what they used to be. As for your e-mail, I have written back. I have never sold a card, but traded a few. Get in touch again, we can work something out.

Joe Wood with the Ness City and Hutchinson Kansas baseball teams. Joe is bottom right on the Ness City and third from right, top row on the Huthcinson.

is the Ness City 1908?

As I am sure you know, Joe is in the Ramly 1909 ad piece I posted above, front row second from right, hard to really see as it's not a close up.

Scott, thanks for the compliment. Your Ramly photo is fantastic too. The Ness City team is from 1906. I have an earlier image of Joe in an Ouray Colorado team photo but he's just the team mascot.
