Default Topps Team Set Questions

Few questions for you Topps team set collectors out there.

1.) Do you include variations, leaders, record breakers, specialty cards and multi-team cards in your team sets?

2.) Do you collect until 2014 or do you have a cut-off date? What is it and why?

3.) Top loaders or albums?

4.) Wrappers? graded cards? autographed cards? unopened cello packs or rack packs with stars from your team showing?

5.) What about parallel Topps sets like Topps Venezuelan or O-Pee-Chee?

5.) What about parallel Topps sets like Topps Venezuelan or O-Pee-Chee?

1.) Not really, but if it's something listed on teamsets4u, then I do.

2.) Yes, keeps the collection ongoing, from year to year.

3.) Definitely album pages, actually at this point I am going each year sorted by card#, with blank spaces set aside for cards I need, based on the card # order on teamsets4u. Note my pre 1980's, I am only concerned with about them being in VG condition, if my 50's and 60's were high-grade then I would be hesitant about storing them in pages.

4.) Not me, but I am sure some people here do that.

5.) Nope, although I have a few junk-era OPC team sets, but I am not actively going for this. Topps base sets first then I might get into the others down the road.

1. I include all but the variations in my team set.

2. While I have not updated my team set on the recent end, yes, my intention is to keep the run as recent as possible.

3. Albums

4. For me, I add none of these.

5. I do not include any parallels like the the Venz and OPCs. However, since I collect NYYs, I have included any of the 77-79 BK cards that are not included in the regular issue Topps set.

1. Yup, I collect every card that pictures a Met.

2. After 1990, I usually have 1 team set from from every year.

3. Albums.

4. Yes, I don't go out of my way on racks or cellos but I have a few.

5. Absolutely, love oddball stuff.

Tiger collector

1.) No variations or print defects. Started with just cards appearing in the Surf book from the late 80's, I am now chasing any Topps card that has a Tiger featured (not cards that have a Tiger in the photo on another players card). I'll work on the Bowman's next.

2.) 2000. Nice round number and I don't like collecting active players (I do not own a Miguel Cabrera card in a Tiger uniform).

3.) Semi-rigid until 1968. I keep them in a couple of drawers in my card cabinet. 1969-2000 are in sets (album or boxed).

4.) My Kaline's, team cards, T206's, and a handful of others are entombed. The rest, see above.

5.) No parallel sets and my plan is to dump all of my Fleer and Donruss cards. I am pursuing Topps Archives certified autograph cards.

I am a Cardinals team set collector. I started with just doing Topps base from 1951 to present. I then branched out to vintage Topps inserts and test issues listed in the SCD, vintage and modern Bowman, Fleer, Fleer misc, Donruss, Donruss misc, UD, Topps Heritage, Bowman Heritage, Topps Chrome and Refractors, plus many other misc issues. All of these are completed except for list at very bottom.

1) Yes, in my team sets, I include league leaders, team cards, all star cards, multi-player rookies, etc.

2) No cut off date. I just bought 2014 Topps Heritage this week. I'm waiting on Topps Series 2 to come out.

3) Albums all the way.

4) No graded cards for my team sets. No official autographs for my team sets. I do have a separate collection of Topps base cards that are signed (over 1,000 signatures). I don't do packs and wrappers for team sets, but I have them for my Topps complete sets. I have complete Topps sets from 2013 back to 1968 with packs down to 1975, and wrappers from 1974 to 1968.

5) I do some parallel Topps sets (see opening statement). I have not started Venezuela or OPC yet. I have a few OPC and will probably try to complete them eventually. No Venezuela yet, but I will probably start those eventually.

I must say that every type of team set that I listed above is totally complete except for the following -

Topps test issues and inserts up to 1998 (From SCD Catalog; basically, if it is not listed below, then I have it. I will work on 1999 to present in the future).

1955 Topps Hocus Focus - Wally Moon

1955 Topps Stamps - Joe Cunningham, Alex Grammas, Harvey Haddix

1961 Topps Dice Game - Stan Musial, Bill White

1966 Topps Punchouts - Curt Flood

1967 Topps Discs - Orlando Cepeda

1967 Topps Stand Ups - Orlando Cepeda, Tim McCarver

1968 Topps Plaks - Orlando Cepeda

1970 Topps Candy Lids - Richie Allen

1972 Topps Candy Lids - Lou Brock

1973 Topps Comics - Joe Torre

1990 Topps Folders / Sport Shots / Portfolio / Duo-Tang Pedro Guerrero

1994 Topps Black Gold Winner ABCD

1997 Topps Proshooters Marbles - Ron Gant, Checklist #2

1998 Topps Milestones (regular; not Chrome or Refractor) - Dennis Eckersley

Refractors

2001 Topps Retrofractors 146 Fernando Tatis

Fleer Oddball

1967 Fleer Logo Emblems & Cloth Patches (tallboys; test) - Cardinals Logo Emblem (1966 w/l record; save all 19 cards), Cardinals Cloth Patch, Cardinals Trio Cloth Patch

1968-70 Fleer Cloth Patches - Cardinals (orange; blue bordered logo)

1969 Fleer Pennants & Stamps - Cardinals

1970 Fleer Iron Ons - Cardinals

1973 Fleer Team Logo Decals - Cardinals

1976 Fleer Iron Ons - Cardinals

Hey Al,

Do you have packs from all the years you mentioned? I have never seen unopened packs from before the mid 60's in person. However, I imagine that if someone does have a collection of vintage packs, it is you!

Default Packs

I do have unopened packs from 1951 to 2014 for Topps, but only penny packs for 56 and 58. Anthony who posts as Griffins also has a full run of the older packs, including a nickle pack for 58 ( maybe 56 as well) Those two are the toughest. I have scans I can post of many of mine but Anthony has a scan of all of his in a display. I will ask him to post it. It has been in some prior threads
