Okay, here's another stupid t206 Wagner auction,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1972176622&category=31718

But before you say "hey Scott, this is nothing new - get a life!", go to the following web-site:

http://honuswagner_5mill.tripod.com/real/id1.htm

Kudos to PSA for ignoring this moron.

I'm sure Ohio is a great state (John Glenn, Ohio State Football, Jim Thome and the rest), but when I saw the item, I just right away that the seller was from Ohio... And low and behold.

This seller has been around for some time now, naturally under various nicknames. This is his most elaborate listing to date. It is also his most comical/interesting.

I sent this clown a couple pictures and asked him to compare his garbage with a real Wagner. Im sure a 5 year old can see the differences!!!!

1. No black pinstripe surrounding picture
2. Caption is wrong font, spacing, and color. It is black on his fake when it really should be a brownish-gray color (compare caption to the black line above it).
3. The "G" on uniform on his card touches the border. A real Wagner card will have a gap between the "G" and border.
etc. Oh well............ his webpage is a good laugh

The seller's use of the 'Premier' card designation (the use of the designation is a first, and hopefully last, in my experience), took a speck of brain, as it sort of serves, in a clownish way, to cover his tracks.

If someone points out that it doesn't look like a real card, he can simply say, "Of course it doesn't look like the regular card, because it's a Premier card. They were made before the regular cards, and are going to look different."

Or, when someone protests, he can say, "Have you ever seen a Premier card? If you haven't, then how would you know what one's supposed to look like."

Naturally, I'm amused by the "1 of only 5 print consultants in the world"-- whatever that's supposed to mean. And, that a card whith that much incredible surface wear (Honus looks as if he was perculated with the coffee in the coffee pot), can have sharper corners and edges than a 2001 Fleer.

I sent a message to safeharbor telling them this is a joke; a counterfeit; obvious; stupid; ridiculous, you get the drift. I'm sure others have, too...if you have a minute, it'd be nice if you could add to their pile of complaints.

So I submitted my offer to the seller through the link on his website. Here's what I wrote:

Dear Sir,

I would like to offer a zillion dollars for your card. Yes, I know what you're thinking. A zillion dollars is a lot of dough. Some would say it's more than a trillion. Others might suggest it's less. But I tell you what -- there's one thing that we can be sure of. A fictitious sum of money is always the optimal amount to offer when purchasing a reprinted card. Trust me on that. The two go hand-in-hand.

Best regards,
Michael

... someone actually used the buy it now on the card and didn't pay, would the seller still have to pay his listing fees?

what would the seller's fee be on 5 million bucks? around $250,000? talk about getting royally screwed!

I, for one, would not want to be the guinea pig and place a $5 million dollar bid. Especially since eBay has my credit card number.

but if i did it correctly, the Final Value Fee on 5 mil would be $75,011.81.

Not to mention the $3.30 listing fee, plus $0.05 for the Buy It Now option.

I, for one, double-dog-dare y'all

David, I don't know you at all. But I'm confident your credit card limit is well under $5 million. So you really don't have as much at risk as you thought. Go ahead, give it a try!

Bidding and winning the auction would not mean that the seller has to pay a final value fee. This fee is only due upon completion of a successful transaction. If the winning bidder does not pay, no fee will be assessed -- all the seller has to do is to file a non-paying bidder alert (after 7 days) and then request a final value fee credit within 60 days. If anything, the bidder would be penalized in a situation like this.

I hadn't gone through his whole website (Q & A, Press Release, etc). At first it was humprous (laugh out loud), but after a while it borders on the the disturbing. The guy obviously has mental issues.

The fact that the guy has gone to all that effort to make a website devoted to a 25 cent reprint, says something ain't right.

...about PSA and SGC "not letting him view the grading of his card"...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't PSA and SGC regularly attend card shows all over the US, where they will grade a card right in front of you at the show?

$3.05 for a listing fee and buy it now feature. He can contact one of the underbidders, give him a sob story and probably cart off a cool couple of hundred grand and disappear.

Michael--Do you know how the fee assessmant works in practice. At what point does ebay debit this guys credit card (sending it over his limit ) and, if the bidder does not perform, how long until he gets the credit back. If the debit is some time shortly after the auction and the credit back is some weeks later then he is out whatever interest his credit card company charges on that amount. 12% on $75000 for a month is about $750.

Jay --

The "Wagner" auction ends on November 29. The earliest possibility for billing would be if the seller's billing cycle date occurred at the end of the month -- November 30. If this were the case, and the seller had his checking account debited, it would happen on December 20. If a credit card were on file, it would be charged sometime between December 7 and December 15 (probably closer to December 15).

http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/payfees.html#in

I guess it might be possible to send payment so that it would be received at such a date where it could still be "reversed" or "canceled" after an early eBay billing date (i.e., December 7), but the odds of timing everything perfectly so that the seller would be charged before the buyer, are rather small. (keep in mind that the billing cycles outlined above are the earliest possibilities -- the billing cycle might actually occur weeks later).

Why the reserve? Is it a way of legitmizing the auction. to me a $100,000 worth of a scam would be good enough for me.

Scott, Were you able to get a name and address? Maybe someone on the board lives near him.

Let's say I buy the card, auction closes Nov. 29. Seller's account is now at -$75k and change. Dec. 1, eBay sends him a statement for that amount. It is billed to his credit card, as MW says, a week or two later.

The Final Value Fee is charged automatically--eBay certainly doesn't wait until you've received money! So...if I were to hit the BIN, then, say, arrange a meeting in Ohio with the seller for Dec. 18th or something, he'd expect to be paid, and for that reason, would not file a Non-Paying Bidder warning and get his fees refunded.

In order to screw this guy, it'd just be a matter of stringing him along and convincing him you're going to pay by a certain time. I'm sure most eBay sellers are familiar with this -- you get an e-mail after a week saying the check is in the mail; another in a week or so...maybe payment arrives, maybe it doesn't...if you're a trustworthy person, you can wait a month, easy, before requesting the FVF.
