Default Aging your reprint T206 Wagner's

Posted By: Dylan

Wow, folks, talk about "aging" your Wagner reprint to an extreme. I suppose there's some idiot who will think that if the top half is missing, its gotta be real! Well "to play things safe" its being listed as a reprint atleast.

Not this one of course, but out of the 60 or however many known authentic ones, are there any that exists in this similar condition & would they just grade "authentic" ? If say, REA, was auctioning a similar condition authentic one, what do you think it would go for ? Thanks.

Default Aging your reprint T206 Wagner's

In the mid-80's I was shown a Wagner that had its entire orange background cut out. What remained was the Wagner portrait (with no background) and the bottom border with the name and team designation. The card owner told me he expected to sell that card for about 1/3rd the price he expected to receive for his poor condition Wagner (i.e., a PSA 1). I never followed up with him to ask if in fact he sold that diecut card and at what price, but that is what his expressed expectation was. Needless to say, this being over 20 years later, I have no clue if this 1/3rd ratio would hold (or if in fact it even held then), but that is the only example I can think of.

it's a damn good one. I can't see any of the telltale signs that it is a reprint. Anyone interested in wading in on this discussion?

you can tell immediately by looking at the name & team...black instead of brown/grey, and the type face is wrong...

these fakes are so annoying.

I agree, low feedback, statement that he's selling as a reprint to cover himself, but I'm looking solely at the card and then of course there's the bidding pattern.

Bidder 1 came in strong. He/she is an active bidder on vintage material. Bidder 2 is one of our buddies "I buy fake cards" or someone of that ilk and try as he might he wasn't able to make his point known because of Bidder 1.

I'm not saying it's authentic but on the other hand I'm not convinced it's a reprint.

I went through Trae's Gallery and there were several Wagners with bolder, blackish typeface so that argument in and of itself doesn't convince me.

Finally, if Bidder 1 is in fact correct he/she has to be mighty pissed by this thread.

Alan,
I remember hearing about nine or ten years ago that the "die-cut" Wagner Corey is referring to was holdered in a PSA "Authentic" holder. I believe it was one of the first that they put in those holders. Those were the days when only very special cards went into "Authentic" holders. The other one I know of is the T206 Cobb/Cobb back which is the best known, but was hand-cut. As for the value of a real Wagner in this condition, a couple of years ago Mastro auctioned a Wagner that had three of the four borders completely trimmed off and I believe it went for over 60k. So I would imagine it would be in that range.

Now we're getting somewhere. The off centered print, right to left, is certainly suspect.

Edited to say Bidder 1 still in charge but Bidder 3 has entered the fray. He/she too has a history of bidding on vintage material.

There is another "alignment" issue I always see in these fakes: If you look at a real Wagner (or any other real t206) each individual letter stands in its own space. In other words, you could draw a vertical hairline between each letter. In the fakes, the lettering is too close (although hard to tell), and some letters overlap -- most notable in this case with the WA.

To us it may clearly be a fake, but somebody out there is willing to take a chance that it's real. The high bid is already $255.
