I've never paid any attention to T206 backs...

but after getting a "Ty Cobb" back in a recent auction, I figure that I might actually be able to collect one of every type T206 back.

But here is my question for you experts:

Do these RARE backs ever show up for sale with HOF's on the front...

or should I just go ahead and forget about who is on front of the card and get whatever "commons" I can find with any of these rare backs?

A local dealer in the Detroit area that I buy T206 cards from had a PSA 4 Frank Chance with a Lennox back that he sold. I would bet they do exist with other backs.

That's good to know!

I checked the PSA "pop report"... but PSA does not keep track of which BACKS were on the T206 cards they slabbed.

Fortunately, SGC DOES keep track of the backs when they list cards in their "pop reports."

Unfortunately, SGC has only slabbed ONE HOF with a Lenox back, ONE HOF with a Uzit back...

and only ONE COMMON with a Drum back.

Hal,
I have collected t206 Hall of Fame players with uncommon to rare backs for some time. You could find several (including cobb, speaker, lajoie, johnson, young, and mathewson) if you were patient with it.

I recently made up a list of the of all the cards and which backs came with each. You can find it here:

http://rdwyer.250free.com/T206Backs.html

Scroll down, it's a very long list.

Actually, it looks like there is a Home Run Baker with a Drum caboose on Dan Koochin's Rare Backs site. I saw a Uzit Lajoie on one of those sites linked to the board as well.

Hal,when i was collecting the backs and got to Drum i was the underbidder on both a Bender and a Home Run Baker, and both were on ebay. The toughest back that i have a hall of famer on is a red hindu followed by carolina brights.

When i was collecting the backs i just wanted one as type cards and didnt care who was on front as they were going to be part of a display anyway. It would make sense not to buy a hall of famer in my case because id be replacing the front subject at some point anyway

So,its definitely possible as ive seen hall of famers with all of those backs at one point you just have to be patient or be willing to overspend,or both

I think the person I sold a PSA 2 Lajoie (with bat) Uzit to had it regraded by SGC as an SGC 40. Also, I had SGC grade a Willis (with bat) Uzit - it also graded a 40 with them. I know John Spencer won a nice PSA 7 DRUM Griffith (with Bat) a few years back - nicest Drum I have ever seen by far! If you are friends with John, you might want to contact him. In fact, I think he had several rare backed HOF'ers!!!

I have seen a Cobb red portrait with a red Hindu back and a Johnson pitching with a red Hindu. Sportscardsplus had a PSA 4 Speaker with Drum back about 6 or 7 years ago in an auction and I am kicking myself now for not going for it. BMW has had a Cobb bat off Uzit back for a couple of years at least. They are asking a ton of money for it which I assume is why they can't get rid of it.

I got started on collecting these backs a wee bit too late, I fear.

I really have only 2 T206's with rare backs but they are both beauts: A Griffith batting PSA 7 Drum (I think the CIA could pick up some pointers on Scott Elkins' intelligence network) and a Matty black cap PSA 6 Carolina Brights. I did have a Smith, Chicago and Boston, Brown Lenox, which I auctioned off in a Lipset auction and now of course wish I hadn't. You don't see a rare variation with a very rare back very often. Hal, got your email and about the only card I have that might be of interest to you is a Walter J. portrait, SGC 60 with a Sweet Cap 150 series overprint. While the 150 series is quite common, I haven't seen all that many overprints and feel they are reasonably rare, although some board members may disagree.

Since I can only get the "Ty Cobb Back" card with a red portrait of Ty Cobb on front...

maybe I should start a "T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait" collection and try to get all of the different backs that ever appeared on this card?

Does this sound "interesting" to anyone ... or would it be stupid to have 20 of essentially the same card?

may come away misinformed. I said I was just kidding about no more space on my hard drive. 190KB the list took, to be exact.

I have a Carolina Brights Bender with trees...very nice.
Don't collect rare backs, so that's the only one I have.

You could go for a Cobb with EVERY back combination - that would definitely be an accomplishment. Afterall the Green and Bat On would both be found on the 150/350 Series back types (that are not that tough). The biggie being - you could get the tougher back types with the Bat Off as well as the Red Port.

Sorry John S. - didn't mean to "tell on you" for having the PSA 7 Drum Griffith. I just thought you could make a nice profit and Hal could get the best example of a Drum in the world at the same time - making all parties happy! I just remembered the PSA 7 Griffith Drum b/c you outbid me on that one in the Mastro auction and I was pretty heavy into the type cards and rare backs back then, so I tried to remember where everything went......just in case. At the time, I was putting together a T206 rare back collection in PSA 7 - the Drum and BL 460 and 350 were the only ones I needed in that grade (I never went for any Brown Lenox). Although, another horror story involving John S. - I remember being the underbidder in a rare back lot that John won. I was going to bid again, b/c the Lenox looked brown. Something happened I won a couple other lots and didn't bid. To turn out the Lenox was brown! However, I was extremely happy that it was John who outbid me and I didn't bid any higher. John has been a great help to me over the years - he also sold me my first W555 Cobb years ago!

BTW - since you are reading the posts John - was I correct about where you purchased the E90-1 Jackson you auctioned through Sportscards Plus? Just want to know, so I can kick myself again for buying the E93 Cobb from them, instead of that Jackson!

I think I will just stick to my "restrictions" and continue to only possess ONE card of every HOF.

I already picked up a nice Lenox backed T206 Marquard...

but I am still in the market for the other guys on my list (Johnson, Speaker, Walsh, Wheat, Baker, etc) and the other rare backs!

Scott, your recollection of the source of the E90-1 Jackson is absolutely right. What a memory. I hadn't realized you were the underbidder on both the Griffith and the rare back lot of t206's. Such are the vagaries of trying to collect cards via the auction route. One of the real jewels that Doug Allen picked up in a Mastro auction (now there is a surprize)some time back was a BL 460 Matty black cap. I was the underbidder on that one and think I sulked for a week after losing it. I do remember passing over a W555 Cobb to you and haven't seen another one since. I also remember our discussion regarding which issue, if you exclude post cards, is Cobb's rookie, the W555 or E102. I still am not sure.

John:

Haven't all the "gurus" somehow now determined that the E102 set was from 1909 or 1910 and NOT 1908??

In the new "big book", Lemke says it was published NO EARLIER than mid-1909.

The same is true for the W555 cards.

Thoughts??

Also, I think Hal picked up the Lenox Marquard from R.B. Craik. I could be wrong, as there are quite a few of that particular back/front combo out there - in fact, I had that same back/front combo in a 7 holder at one time!

Wish I still had the W555 Cobb I bought from John - the person I sold it to had it graded SGC 60. I have since owned two others and sold both - one VG range and one PR/FR (the last one I had). With those date changes in SCD, I am just sticking with my Dietsche Cobb - afterall, it has 1907 on the back!

Correct again, Sherlock. I did get the card from Mr. Craik!

It is a PSA 2 ... so let me know if you can find your PSA 7 and I will upgrade!!

I agree ... stick with the Cobb postcard and KNOW that you have something from 1907!
