Default Network 54 Get Together/Dinner/Meeting at the National?...

Posted By: Jon Canfield

Ok Ok, I know it may be a little early to start thinking about this, but I was wondering if there were any plans to meet, have a dinner, or some sort of social gathering at the National. I happened to be talking to Elliot the other night and he had mentioned that in the past, contributors on the board would often meet, if nothing else, to get to know the personalities behind these “handles” we often go by. I, for one, am relatively new to this board, having only found it through Leon about 4 months ago (if even that long ago). However, since then, I have conversed with many of you on here, and have had many business dealing and online transactions with you. Well, to be quite honest, I wouldn’t know any of you if I tripped over you at a show with 100 attendees, let alone the National. And, I would think its safe to say that many people reading this feel the same way – often not knowing the face behind the name. So, with that being said – are there any plans to meet, sort-of like a Network 54 get together? If not, does this sound like an idea? In other words, what sort of interest would there be in such a thing?

Hi all,
The best place to eat lunch in Atlantic City is the White House where they make the best Sub sandwiches in the world. It's located on the block behind Trump Plaza and is a must for any trip to AC.
Unfortunately, I will miss the National again this year, but hope to meet many of you at future events.
Be well Brian

Last year we all met at Scott Brockelman's table and it was fine. This year I have subletted a couple of display cases, at his table, so I think it will be fine again. Last year about 15 of us went across the street one night and had dinner together. After we all squished into our table the Wentz's, and some of their family, showed up. There just wasn't any room left at our table so they had to sit somewhere else. I am sure we will work something out again AND hopefully it will be more condusive to a larger crowd. At night a lot of us got together and partied at my room and other venues....One night Pete was a great cheauffer and we saw Wrigley Field.....see ya there.....and best regards

It will be interesting to put some faces to the names of board members. I'm especially looking forward to meeting runscott. People can be quite different face to face than they are behind a keyboard.

HELLO ALL!

as leon stated, we used my table as a home base last year, and EVERYONE!, will be welcome to use it again, although you may not agree on everything. i would propose we find somewhere fairly close to hold a dinner, perhaps in one of the sheraton restaurants, which would be convenient for everyone coming to and from the show, as many people will be staying in different locations. most card geeks like us are not world travelers and not looking for a 5 star restaurant, just a big jovial meeting place to trade stories & lies, and MAYBE down a few brewskies. we had several evenings of festivities last year which included collectors and higher up from the collecting/card industry world, whose names i shall not mention without permission. but, a grand time was had by all.

i will admit last years lack of seating space at the restaurant table was a very embarrassing situation, the folks at the table were denied quite a bit of collector knowledge when the wentz's arrived and were told the table was full, not a great situation, but out of our control at the time. i hope they hold no grudge and would accept an invitation again.

i guess i failed to mention the table number, but now after finding it i am a bit confused. apparently it is booth # 182 P , it is one of the large promenade sized tables, on the front aisle, just down the row quite a ways. as time goes on i will give more specific details, hell! we can't be that hard to find, just look for dwiddle dee (leon) & dwiddle dumb (me). i am the one with more hair.

When is the national? What days? And where is it located in Atlantic City?

Does anyone know of a good, reasonably priced, place to stay in Atlantic City?

Thanks.

Cy

after several votes and discussions they settled on cleveland once again. the committee has it set up in a tight little circle of about 4 locations for the next 7 years or so. seems a little variety would be nice and let some regionally distressed people join in that would not otherwise travel so far.

I've been envisioning Al Sharpton and you've probably got me as a skin-head in a business suit.

Yeah, let's all meet. We'll have a Grand Ol' Party in the Yankee north. Instead of buying lunch, why don't we steal some food stamps from some poor people. And maybe for dessert, a good lynching. Then a toast to Cap Anson and Judge Landis who fought so hard to keep our National pastime pure. Next we'll spit on the grave of the traitor Branch Rickey who single-handedly destroyed the game we love.

Once we're full, we can take whatever is on everyone else's plate because God knows we're entitled to it.

Yes, let's all meet at the National Socialist Party Convention...um, I mean the National Sports Collectors Convention. I'll be the one with the confederate flag and the swastika on my forehead.

Yeeeeeeee Hawwwwww!!!

but I was thinking more along the lines of a huge bonfire (Sequoia lumber preferred), followed by a gourmet meal: skewers of whole spotted owls and tender chunks of baby seal steak, slowly roasted over giant redwood coals.

And, in honor of you, Ryan - we can talk about everything EXCEPT vintage baseball, the more controversial and irrelevant the better.

As long as we meet face to face, it's all good with me. I can assure you that you won't speak to me in person the way you do on this board. In fact, I doubt you'll show up at all. But if you do, I would love to try some redwood-smoked spotted-owl-and-baby-seal-kabobs with you.

I have to laugh at the comments you make that are intended to be jabs at me. You really have no idea what my political views are, but keep posting about them. I like to laugh.

So you can better aim your future jabs, here are some things that might help: I am not overly concerned with the environment; I am not at all concerned about animals; I am not a democrat; I am not a pacifist; I am looking forward to meeting you in person.

Oddly enough, I do look exactly like Al Sharpton, though. I'm not sure how you knew that since you've never seen me before. Or have you?...

Regarding vintage baseball, I'd love to discuss players like Pete Hill, Grant Johnson or Dick Redding with you because I, like you, am interested in the history of baseball. But more specifically, we should probably talk about vintage baseball CARDS.

So tell me, Scott, what would you guess is the existing population of the 1910 Punch Ty Cobb card? How many of those do you think still have the back attached? How many 1910 Punch cards total still have the back attached? Why is there no card of Adolfo Luque in the 1923-24 Billiken set?

See you soon,

-Ryan

It has no relevance at all to anything, nor does what I look like. But if we meet at the National, I will definitely buy you a drink and talk cards. As everyone on this board knows, I'm easily intimidated by physical size and frightful appearances, so please be gentle - I damned near wet my pants when I met Pete last year .

It's a joke Pete - I look forward to seeing you at the National as well, if I can make it, but you and Ryan will have to share the free beer.

Somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line would have been great. What happened to Dallas as a site? Is Wanda Marcus still alive? Are the majority of the voters from the North and Left Coast?
Nashville, Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta would have been great. Hell, I'd even settle for Boston or New York just not Cleveland... (Aware I have once again offended someone on this board)

bob,

i guess they think higher populated areas are better, as to your question.

now the bad news,
wanda marcus is still alive, i think. she fell into a severe coma during a routine surgery about 3 years ago, i think she is still alive but basically incapacitated, i have talked to john marcus and her daughter pam, since then, but the outlook is bleak. an anitheisiologist mistake i believe. i also think they are in litigation.

i have an open invitation to all board members to convene at my table, but this ryan guy has me worried, hard core demi, surely a great card collector, but perhaps severely dissillusioned in real life. he's got it all backwards, we don't steal from anyone! the government steals from us to pay the nonworking lazy sob's.

SORRY FOR THE POLITICAL POST, BUT IS A REPLY NOT AN ATTACK.

I AM SURE ELLIOTT WILL DELETE THE POST SO READ FAST. YOU KNOW THE CANUCKS.

on an upnote tbob is probably the only demi i like and i think we can swing him with further education.

SCOTT

Pete, thanks for taking on the job of finding an appropriate place for the dinner. Is everybody thinking that Thursday night would probably be the best night?

I think the National site for the next 5 or 6 years has been set, going in an Atlantic City, Cleveland, Chicago rotation. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of support for a return to Anaheim or another location.

The Canadians love seeing political in-fighting among the Americans - gives them the sense that we are crumbling and they can come in and stretch out our football fields.
