How this auction is even getting any bids is beyond me.

actually..that is a legit card put out by topps in 1998
as part of both the clemente tribute and '54 reprint set.

..what was your problem with it?

edited to ask ..or why was it "to" funny

edited again: BTW as i recall it was a short print...as was the mantle card..which prolly sells for around 25 bucks "too"

Well if it is a legitimate card then shame on Topps for producing something of this nature. It is hard enough keeping up on so many different card types and they produce a card like this in my opinion is moronic and only confuses the people in the hobby and potentially give more amunition to the scammers. Next we will be seeing them advertising this card as the true Clemente rookie card and idiots out there will believe it.

Two thumbs down for Topps on that bone head move.

No argument here on the obscene glut of cards produced in recent years, but as to this Clemente, Topps never represented it as anything other than what it is. No one is responsible for their legitimately produced products being mis-used by the moral cripples in our society. In a profit driven society such as ours, it has always been Caveat Emptor. Educate yourself before laying down your money.

Back in the 70's and early 80's there was a huge outcry to stop the reprints, according to old publications. They were severely frowned upon by the older collectors at that time. Today they are just part of the hobby....and not quite as bad as the graded cutout crap that is just a pseudo-scam....regards

edited to say indeed this is not a reprint and a "what if".....my bad...I wasn't thinking newer stuff.....

This isn't even a reprint. One of those "what could of been's", I guess.

Why would this be funny. In 1994 when Topps produced this set I spent some enjoyable time putting together a complete set by opening packs and I remember the Clemente as being one of the hardest to acquire. I think $25 would be reasonable for this card. Why anyone thinks this is funny would not make any sense as this set was well recieved when it came out in 1994.

Methinks the point of the original post was to point out that the listing touts it is a "1954 Roberto Clemente," which it is clearly not.

In my humble opinion, it is unlikely that one of us will be fooled by offerings such as this. But there is far too much of this, and worse, stuff.

It is easy to say "do your homework" when you are an advanced student of the subject, who continues to devote significant time in the study of your hobby; but not every collector is willing to devote the time necessary to acquaint himself with each and every reprint, remanufacture, what - if, maybe possible, perhaps it could be - or whatever excuse label is chosen to portray an opportunity for deception.

This is what makes our hobby weaker. Specifically, defrauding the aspiring novice. Who will opt for a less risky hobby once he finds himself out of a few months of disposable income with nothing to show for it.

This hobby is comitting suicide. Very, very few will study enuff to get to your level before buying several hundred dollars "worth" of cards.

No, Gil, not every collector is willing to put the time in to learn the intricacies of this hobby, but then, what's the alternative? Trusting in human nature? The crooks will always be with us and we have no choice but to cover our own butts through knowledge. I don't know, maybe I'm too much the cynic.
