Kuhn was not a bad commish, he was in an impossible position given the arrogance of the owners at the time, who refused to give one inch to the players. The players would have gladly taken a much more restrictive form of free agency, and history would be quite different today. Perhaps you could fault Kuhn for not getting that done, but was it really doable given the ownership at the time?

I met Kuhn at HOF ceremonies about 1969, had him and a few other VIP types sign a page in my book, brings back fond memories...

Guys,

Bowie had it tough with the team owners. Right now Bud Selig only has to deal with Steinbrenner and a couple other stubborn owners. Even George is mellowing with age. Will Bowie had to deal with about 10 hard headed owners and still was able to lead the MLB in the right direction. RIP.
