I wonder if it comes from a smoke-free home.

What makes you think it's ashtray size? I don't see the dimensions listed. Did you ask?

it certainly doesn't look like an ashtray. Maybe he's calling it an ashtray because he doesn't know what else to call it?

Actually it looks like a tray of some sort. If you look at top right corner seems like there is a ridge between edge of paper and gloss... I would email him for dimensions and pictures of the back if interested in it...

The item description says "The newspaper you see is the ACTUAL NEWSPAPER, it has been encased inside glass. Made by my grandmothers uncle way back when".

One quick glimpse should tell anyone that that is neither a real newspaper nor handmade. Cheap transfer ware on glass.

A quick google search brings up several different versions that from the looks of it would be an 80s item.

If you want one for only 1993.00 bucks cheaper with a free cup have at it...

(Not mine, FYI)

Default Fyi

I do believe it is a vintage item (I have seen them offered numerous times before) - a glass ashtray commemorating the 1971 Pirate win - possibly from 71, possibly later. DEFINITELY NOT one of a kind (see previous post) and DEFINITELY NOT a newspaper under glass.

It is vintage and measures 5X7. There is also a 1971 NLCS version and a 1960 World Series version. They are made of cheap glass. The gazette also made similar dishes of a smoked looking glass with gold lettering for 1960 and 1971.

I don't think the guy was a scammer. I think he was misinformed. I talked to him via eBay and I think he was truly convinced that his grandma's uncle made it. When I showed him the link above to the other completed items just like it, he said that he would remove the listing. He didn't argue at all (as most scammers will) and he was very polite about it. The listing has been removed.
