Dan,

Was really just kidding. Since I collect Brooks his cards “have to” be my favorites. The following are my real list:

1. Johnny Bench #95
2. Pete Rose #120
3. Mark Belanger #299

Honorable Mention - Earl Weaver #516

I really like the AS cards as well.

As beautiful as it is (and a dream for autograph collectors), the problem with the 1969 set is how so many of the cards were just rehashed pics from other years (Due to contract problems/money/Marvin Miller. We all know the drill). The great cards of Ernie Banks and Willie Mays that I love, for instance, are simply re-dos from the past with different cropping. Love the Bench, though.

1. Bench Topps All-Star Rookie
2. Mickey Mantle last Topps regular issue
3. Nolan Ryan first Topps own-card

ETA: I agree with Darren. The Mays, Seaver, Brooks, and Carew cards each have awesome, iconic photographs, but were used before (Mays in 66 (and 67 pinup), Seaver in 68, Brooks in 67 (my favorite Brooks), and Carew in 68)

The World Series cards in 1969 were a triumph of design, conveying a ton of information in a small space and looking neat. The Reggie Jackson rookie card is a classic. And as a kid who grew up in the D.C. area, the return of Ted Williams to manage the Senators (captured in the last series after Topps had made an earlier card of fired manager Jim Lemon) ranks right up there with the moon landing and Woodstock as the year's big events. The Aurelio Rodriguez batboy card gets honorable mention.

Totally agree with JollyElm, as has been discussed in a few other threads. At least for Mays they skipped a couple years before re-using a pic; Hank Aaron and others have the same photos as in 1968. Also, I was recently noticing the Chris Short card. It was shot in the Polo Grounds, where the Mets last played in 1963.

The three cards I really liked as a kid back in 1969 were:

1. Gus Gil, because it showed both the expansion Pilots cap and jersey rather than just bare or airbrushed head shots. It was neat seeing these new teams, plus, how can you not like the name Gus Gil?
2. Jerry Koosman, because he was a rookie stud that year for a World Series champ and hailed from Minnesota, and the photo just looked real crisp and cool with the trophy; and
3. Manny Sanguillen, because I loved the pose and the overcast sky, and really liked pronouncing his name.
Honorable mention: Bobby Murcer, the new Mantle.

As for the stars, my faves card-wise were Reggie, Frank Robinson and Killebrew.

I always enjoyed the new trophy cards as a kid. Most of them are pretty plain in this set though, but the Bench is a slight winner for best trophy card over my pick below and a Bobby Cox RC. Koosman is a decent card too. Since the 69 set has very few shots outside of close up portraits, it becomes harder to narrow down a favorite from a sea of boring.

3 that come to my mind are:

Pete Rose
Willie Davis
Bobby Bonds

I also always really liked the Drysdale card for some reason, perhaps because it was his last.

I also like the NL (Dodger) rookie stars card that has Darwin, Miller and Dean. Darwin and Miller in their only Dodger card appearances and Dean as a Padre, but obviously an airbrushed Dodger shot.

Default 1969 Topps

Many of the oddities are due to the fact (IMO) that expansion forcved Topps to make players cards that they normally would not . They had to make up for the 80 or so players that had their card show by one of the four new teams.

I actually statrted to compile a list of such and will share.

Examples Boston - Newman, George Thomas
Mets Hendley,
White Sox Russ Nixon

Expansion plus Marvin Miller and a contract impass between Topps and The Players' Association over use of player likenesses that resulted in the use by Topps of older photos in part of 68 and 69.

The Clemente always been on my short list of best looking cards:

Bench has two great cards but I think the whole AS subset in 1969 is just great so I'll go with his AS card:

This wasn't always a favorite but since I got this one I have really taken to it:

Since we didn't specify "Topps":

Default Bench, Banks and Hundley

It's the aforementioned Banks and Bench, along with Randy Hundley:
DANG! I consider myself above average with tech-things like uploading a picture, but I can't figure out how to get the Hundley picture to appear.

Oh well, it's a beauty, like many, many 1969 Topps BB cards!

Happy New Year to everyone!

I was never a fan of the 69 Bench card missing his hat. I always preferred the 1970 Topps.
