Default Retro MVPs

For anyone who hasn't read these, they are really well done, It's Chris Willis same guy who did the top 100 books. This new one is for 1934: http://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.c...troactive.html

Notice the excellent comment about linemen from one our own board members. Reminds me of when I did my 30s draft - the lack of information makes evaluating players from this time period a real challenge.

Wow, I need to spend more time on that blog! Great article and concept.

Thanks for posting it here, John.

Jeff - glad you liked it - one thing I forgot to mention - I liked seeing Warren Heller and Ed Matesic get mentioned. Its funny how as time goes by I appreciate more the 36 players Chicle chose - sure there are some real head scratchers (sorry Tom Hupke - your team just had too many great players), but they actually did a really good job - I'd love to know who the next 12 or 24 players would have been..

Hi Dez,
Thanks for the link. It was really informative and I liked the way the broke the season down with respect to their choice for MVP. Amazing that Feathers missed 2-1/2 games but still broke the 1,000 yard barrier.

As for the idea of National Chicle issuing more players, I would love to have seen a true Hutson RC and a card of Swede Hanson (I'm an Eagles fan). I can't wait to read up on the other season's MVP's and for them to tackle the 1920's.

Thanks again.

Thanks Scott - nice call on Hutson and Hanson. Here’s an article from my home state I really like on Hanson: The legend of Swede Hanson, among the Shore's greatest: http://www.app.com/story/sports/2015...nson/25505833/ (All the ads are really annoying - but it’s Asbury Park Press - I think it’s a legitimate site, someone just needs to tell them pop ups these days will scare away users.)

My next 12 high numbers or “really” high numbers would be something like:

Swede Hanson
Don Hutson (Believe it or not, I think Stan Kostka was actually the most hyped of the incoming rookies)
Mike Michalske
Arnie Herber
Johnny “Blood” McNally
Bill Hewitt
George Musso
Ace Gutowsky (premium exists)
Ox Emerson
George Christensen (premium exists)
Father Lumpkin
Mel Hein (Whose that #7 guy in the backfield on Isola's card?)

I left Cal Hubbard out since he didn't play in 34. Red Grange's last year was 34, but not sure if Chicle would have known that when the cards were printed (Grange does have a premium at least).

Great list. I would definitely include Grange, though. He's such an iconic player!
