Default show your 1971 Topps football...

Considering getting back into football...1st time since 1977..when I was a kid. This was the 1st set I collected so I thought it would be appropriate to focus on this great set.

Default Oh boy

You got one in my wheelhouse...
I have to get my camera warmed up and I should be able to show you my zany 1971 Topps collection.
Despite my passion for HOFers and being primarily a baseball card collector...I have a distinct fondness for this set.
This is the set that really got it all started for me!

More to come!

Default An idea of scope

Yes, I have a lot of 1971 Topps!

I have 16 partial sets , maybe 10 or 11 full ones, and enough extras of the lower numbers to collate about 10 more partials.

I collect/hoard #186 Jim Kiick cards...I think I have 40, but would like to get 186 of them. A nice even number like that would be nice...since collecting 1,971 of the same card seems silly.

I am always on the lookout for cheap, large lots of these cards. I probably will add more sets into binders this summer. Condition is not crucial. Message me if you want to offload yours

Anyway, a couple pics attached...I don't know why they flipped or will only show one at a time, but it's pretty frustrating ...I guess IPad does its own thing.

Nice collection Brian! Why Jim Kiick? Why 186? Why Why?

The number two (of two) 1971 "Pin-Ups"set on the PSA Registry. I bought them this way (except Butkus) the dealer was tired of dragging them around!

Default Kiick

Well, I am going to spare you all the nerdy details, but let's just say that I would have never "met" any of you without the 1971 Topps FB set.

While I had gathered cards from 1970 in both football and baseball as an 8yr old, when I turned 9 I was completely obsessed. I was a Miami Dolphin fan growing up in Vermont (of course). Jim Kiick , Larry Csonka and Bob Griese were on top of the world to me!

So I collected these cards with passion, doing any chores I could do to earn a dime so that I could acquire more packs. That passion took over as the season turned to baseball in 1972 (I have lots of those too) and I have never really looked back. I had a few years off , as most of us had , as we grew up and had other interests competing for those dimes.

When I re-entered the card collecting world in 1988? I still had all of my old cards except my tall boy basketball and my 1971 Topps FB! So I found some on eBay and it went crazy from there.

When we were opening those cards as kids, it seemed Csonka (1st series) was easy to get. Kiick was harder to find ( 2nd series, although not tremendously more difficult, just a little).
Kiick was my favorite of the bunch...and 45 years later I am still at it!

Hey, I was going to spare the details and just beg for more Kiick cards, but instead I will just go to eBay and see what's out there this week

Default Guru!

As yes Larry, your old Bradshaw now rests comfortably in my binder...number 12 of the 14 I have!
I remember how happy I was the day it showed up in my mail, unannounced!
You are awesome BTW!

As you can tell from the photo, it's a Tipton Gem mint. It's a real keeper!

That 71 set is sweet. Great background of Kiick. I thought I had completed it back in 2015 when I picked up Bradshaw and Greene. However, when I put the cards in my binder, I noticed I was still missing two. Pearson and Hanratty. So, who came to my rescue. The 71 master himself. Thanks again Toad for putting that set to bed for me.

I don't have the answer - I'm just responding because it did remind me that for the past several holidays, I've been sorting cards from my childhood collection most of which were stored in those exact white boxes and I did notice some curvature.... I'd be interested if anyone else has an opinion, but when storing large quantities of cards, I think there will always be some compromises.....If every card had to be handled like a million dollar Honus Wagner - the hobby would probably add stress which I think is counter to what hobbies are supposed to do
