Default PSA 8 Delong Auction Cancelled

Posted By: Bruce Dorskind

We were among the high bidders in a competitive e-bay auction
for a PSA 8 Delong auction for O'Doul

We just received a note from E Bay that our bid was cancelled.
When we visited the listing it said the auction has ended and
the card sold for $4.99

Does anyone know what all this means and why this particular auction
was cancelled?

No when you go to E Bay there is no record of the event.

Sounds like the auction was ended early.

One of the crummy things that happens with eBay sales - people make offers offline, and the seller does the transaction off eBay. Sorry it happened to you. Most of us hate that.

Since it's listed under the completed auctions I'm guessing the seller sold it off-line.

We were able to call the auction house that was selling the PSA 8 O'Doul

We asked why are bid was cancelled. They said that their consignor decided
he wanted his card back.

We wonder if that course of action is acceptable within the E Bay rules.

If that is the case, why couldn't one decide (without any real reason) to cancel
every auction in which he/she does not like the prices.

In the case of O'Doul the card had reached about 40% of what was likely to be
the final price but the auction was not due to close for another 48 hours.

Please explain to us what the rules are

Thanks in advance

A listing party can cancel an ebay listing for no reason at all. Usually it is an offline sale, but sometimes there are legitimate reasons. Really, there are...

Ah, young Bruce. It's taken you this long to have a card in your sights, with your tongue hanging out, counting the hours down, until it suddenly disappears? Only to see the message "the item is no longer for sale" stuck in your face? It's a bitter pill for sure.

Could it be time to redevelop that elaborate eBay bidding formula and come up with a new attack plan (which is complex)?

Bruce-

90% of the time these sellers end the auction early I would guess they take an offer that is less than what they would have received by running the auction to completion. It does suck, but it is a game on ebay. I can by no means say I haven't asked sellers to end auctions early...I have like most on here probably have. The one thing I guess you could/should have done is to have emailed the seller something like "I'm dissapointed to see you ended the auction early, I was prepared to bid "x" amount. I've seen cards that were ended only to be relisted again a few hours later...I'd suspect that is what happens from time to time. I've seen many cases where just because an item is ended early, doesn't necessarily mean the bidding is over.

We challenge you.

We think you have, in fact, lied to the Board.

Post the new PSA 8 Delong of O'Doul you purchased along
with the sales slip. Make sure to show the PSA Certification Number

If you are telling the truth, which we sincerely doubt,
we'll send $100 to the American Cancer Society.

And if you are not - tell the Board so and you
send $100 to the American Cancer Society

He's busting your chops, Bruce.

Or, umm, he's busting your chopses, Bruces.

It's no fun getting smoked like that, but unfortunately its a fact of life on eBay these days. That's what happens when you raise your fees - people try and figure out ways of getting around them. List an item and then remove it, and you pay the listing fees but not the final value fees. Not a bad way to get eyeballs with eBay's huge reach, for a tiny fee.

But as a buyer on the wrong side of that transaction, it's no fun.

Bruce, who is "we" and you challenging me to anything is a joke. I bet you are the only person here on this board that thought I was serious. Get a grip and if you feel the need to call me a liar, you know where I set up at Philly, please stop by. Oh and by the way, I have recently picked up a 1914 Terrapin Pennant which I believe is on your so called toughest want list (which is another joke) but I am not going to waste my time as I know you won't pay for it. If you would like a scan and price, email me privately. Oh that's right, I blocked you, we, all yuz, from emailing me because you are so nice and friendly and fair to deal with. Pound Pavement.

Edited to state that as a surviving cancer patient, I send plenty of money to the cancer foundation.

Bruce is ok, he once promised me a Suggs Baltimore News card if he ever sold and it showed up in an auction later. He now has a GC Miller wrapper that I would give my left one for, oops! I mean right one, left is gone thanks to the cancer, and he is impossible to get anything out of. Yet he used to email me quartly or monthly asking if I have anything he would be interested in. Well it works both ways, scratch my back and I will scratch yours. I got tired of the emails and not being able to get anything out of him so I unloaded on him here. Bruce is a well respected player in the hobby and I don't hate him, I just needed to vent a Baltimore News card and a GC Miller wrapper on him a bit. And the "lied" set me off as most of you intelligent board members know I didn't buy that PSA 8 card. Dan.

Dan

If you care to make jokes in public -try subjects you know
well -like the child like behavior of someone who cries out
loud when they request information on the identity of a seller
in a private transaction. And the acquirer refuses the request

Rant and rave all you wish

As for the Federal League Pennant- we have four different examples
And the Baltimore example, which we offered long before you saw
it, is indeed quite lovely. However, we chose to pass for reasons which
are none of your business.

As for America's Toughest Want List- we have acquired 10 items
this year.

It is clear that you would do everyone a favor if
you spent your time minding your own business and leaving
your jokes about others collections off this board

Bruce, I can't believe you delelted the hillbilly comment! I thought that was funny. Anyway, thanks for the kind words and congrats on crossing off 10 items on your want list. I get lots of emails thanking me for my jokes, mainly from old timers who are lurkers. Take care and good luck in your future memorabilia hunting. It is always a good feeling to cross an item off of a want list. I recently acquired a lousy Wacky Package sticker I was hunting for 10 years and it felt great to draw that line through the item! Dan (the hillbilly).

Dan,

Please post a scan of the PSA 8 DeLong O'Doul bound and gagged with a copy of today's paper. To show you're serious, please slice off a corner of the card and send to Bruce by the end of the day unless your demands are met.

Sincerely,

Bruce,

For things you really want you need to contact the seller and make him an offer to take it down. I do it--sometimes with success, sometimes not.
Happens all the time.

As Jim states just above, you should contact the seller and this can be done even after the auction is closed down prematurely. My good friend Scott E got me once after I shut down a no red T206 Wagner Boston. There was even a post about it on this board while it was happening and sure enough, the seller backed out on me but I don't think Scott paid the outrageous price he offered to crush my closure deal. All fair in love and war. Another friend almost got me on a group lot but I wiggled through that one. Dan.

After losing on some key '38 Goudey upgrades due to sellers ending auctions early, I've gotten to the point where if there's a '38 Goudey that I need, I'll contact the seller and let him know that I plan on bidding aggressively. I'll encourage him/her to keep the auction open, but will also state that I'd be willing to make an offer if he/she is inclined to sell the item off eBay.

I only do that with '38 Goudeys, however. There are no other cards that I need to own that badly.

I remember about 5 years ago I contacted a seller on ebay about a card I needed to complete a 1910 Series of 150 Obak set and completed a transaction and a couple of "anonymous" guys on the board lost their minds and threatened the seller that they would report him to ebay and have him banned for all eternity. I had already sent the money by Paypal. Due to the interference, the card was relisted, I got sniped and ended up buying it a year later in one of Barry's auctions when the seller flipped it. Happened a couple of years ago on Baltimore News E94 also.
Almost all of the people on this board are outstanding and great, but there are a few asshats.
The point of all of this is that I came out and revealed it was I who bought the Baltimore News card (the same thing happened, the seller was threatened, the card was relisted, I was outsniped yadda yadda yadda). This was the last time I did this. Until then no one was ever revealing who they were when they bought a card in a private deal on ebay. Now almost everyone has no problem with it.
