Default How do you feel about Cards with wrong Image

Posted By: Jerry

I was wondering how some collectors view Cards of Players with the wrong Image.
I.E, T3 Home Run Baker (Jack Barry Image), Tango Eggs Weaver (Joe Tinker Image), E92 Cy Young (Irv Young? Image), etc.

Do you view these type cards with same premium as you would if they were the right Image. I'm talking to non-Set collectors as a set collector would want the card regardless of Image to complete the set.

What other examples of wrong Image cards are out there.
Just wondering
Jerry

Because I'm not sure how to present the card and, for some reason, it feels like cheating to me. If I have a Cy Young card I want it o be Cy Young, dammit.

In one case, though, it's a lucky break. In the Cuban Nacionales set, the Valentin Dreke card actually pictures Lucas Boada and happens to be the only image of Boada on a card.

D'oh. I should check my database before I spout off. Boada is also in the Gutierrez and Agulitas sets. I'd still be happy with a card of his, even mislabeled, though. So, I guess for me a misidentified card isn't really desireable unless the player pictured is hard to find.

It depends- it's more glaring on portrait poses than action poses. The Cy Young/Irv Young doesn't bother me as much as the Yum Yum of Anson, which is actually a portrait photo of Ned Williamson. It's more obvious in that case.

I prefer that the card actually picture the player depicted and, unless going after the complete set, would likely avoid buying such cards. The cy young/irv young e98 is a prime example of a card I really wouldnt want to spend a lot of money on. The only card that I make a small exception for is the e93 eddie collins which I believe most collectors assume to be jimmy collins. At least in that case, its still two hofers. Nevertheless, its my least favorite hofer card in the set.

For my money, the picture on the card establishes the card's identity, not it's caption. So in accordance with my thinking, it follows that there are no wrong pictures, only wrong captions on cards.

Gil,

I like that line of thinking... all my Old Judges are actually Gypsy Queens, Lone Jacks, Yum Yums and GnB's......

What? Did I make a mistake on my understanding of the term "caption"? Of course what I meant was the player's name on the card, not the card manufacturer's identification. But you are the Judge. I will do my time in the cooler.

I think that I have a chance to win this case on appeal:

cap·tion (kpshn)
n.
1. A title, short explanation, or description accompanying an illustration or a photograph.

But I need a good attny, 'cause I got a mean Judge.

Given that I am only collecting one card of each player, having the correct image is very impostnat to me.

I don't really like the cards of Cy Young with images of Irv Young. The e98 and e98 for example... I would rather have an e93 and e94 because its actually CY ! Irv Young is on more than e92, e97, e98, also the w555 and probably alot more....

its kind of an isult to Cy Young in my opinion.

I hope I don't stray too far off course here...

E91 - are there any correct images?

Gil, you're right about the caption, I figured I'd include the advertisement as part of the caption. In my mind, at least I'd have a few nicer cards rather than these ratty OJs...

If I were collecting the e97 or any of the other sets picturing Irv Young instead of Cy, I'd probably rather just go without the card than spend a thousand dollars or so on a card of "Cy Young" that doesn't even picture him.

I know some of the 1920's Ice Cream sets such as Harrington's and Tharp's have the wrong players pictured - the Bill Terry and Paul Waner cards immediately come to mind.
