Default August Pickup

Just started working on this set and picked up these two in my quest. Not the highest quality, but within my budget.

Default Congrats on getting Mantles' first Topps Card!

Not to take the attention away from getting a great iconic card from the 50's
however, it kills me everytime I see the '52 Mantle that has "Rookie" written on the Slab or when it is referred to as Mantles' rookie card. The Bowman 51 is his rookie card not the T'52.

I would be ok with it if it said First topps card. That would fine. Sorry for the rant. Its just my pet peeve. This is not directed at you either by the way.

Very Nice cards and great pick ups! Enjoy them!

Sweet Mantle!! That's a helluva way to start the set!

Anyhow, my pickups will come in later this week, but I won't get the chance to post them then, so here goes (as posted in the pre-war section):

Pre-War from Bagger's Auction:

Post-War: I received these from the winner of the Leland's Sal LaRocca collection:

(PSA Pop 6)

(PSA Pop 5)

I now have 5 of the 13 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson's... ironically, I still don't have the most common of the 13 (fasc. signature).

What kills me is someone always posting about how the 52 Mantle is not really his rookie card. I think most everyone gets it by now. Can't we stop bringing it up?

It's a pet peeve of mine as well. BUT I usually only bring it up to bust balls. In this case though, I think Edward has a valid point in bringing it up. WHY does it say ROOKIE on the flip? It's one thing to casually refer to it as a rookie, but to have it professionally referred to as a rookie? Something's not quite right about that..

Agreed. Somewhat confusing for a professional company to do so.

If most people understands that then why everytime I turn around someone is refering to the '52 Mantle as his rookie card?

Perhaps I didn't articulate well enough and for that I am sorry. I was mostly complaining that "ROOKIE" is written on the slab.

Kinda makes you wonder how much the major grading companies really know about our great hobby. Its just something to chew on. I was not trying to be irate.

I've seen SGC graded 1952 Topps Mays cards with "Rookie" on the label also, but the ones I've seen in the newer holders (with the etched SGC logo on the back instead of the gold label) don't have it on there anymore. I'm not sure why they quit putting "Rookie" on the Mays labels, but didn't change it for the Mantle.

Nice card Frank. It looks like you are going for all the variations aren't you? I am down to a 17 or so high numbers remaining until I complete the set. I am not going after the 60 card mid series (#131-190) gray backs or other variations (except for maybe the Paige/Sain variations).

Good luck with the set.

Thanks Zach for the compliment. I'm going to attempt to complete the set minus the gray back cards (131-190). My next purchase will be the Mathews. Actually before I purchased the Campos, I was going back and forth between Mathews and Campos. I couldn't decide, so my wife made the decision for me.

Nice pickup on your recent purchase. Looks like you are nearing the finish line for completion. I can't wait til I'm down to my last 17.

Thanks! I just put up a new scan that really shows how good the color is, especially for the grade. I guess the original owner must have kept it stored away, but just liked to take it out and look at it a lot!

Dan, very nice!! I was eyeing that card from DavidBVintage, but after my recent purchases, I couldn't fit it in my budget. I'm glad that you were the one to get it.

Thanks Shaun. I have been in 2nd place in most of my recent ebay auctions. It was nice to win one for a change!

It took me a very long time to find a card of Sol White. I'll get this in a PSA slab and eventually add it to my HOF player registry set.

Doug,

Great looking cards. I must say that is one nice Mathews for the grade. That is going to be my next purchase.

I've never owned a '52 Topps Mathews so it will be interesting to see what it looks like in person. I've always thought it was kind of a dull looking card with that grayish blue background, but it does look really nice for a PSA 1 and it's almost dead centered to boot so I figured I'd give it a chance.

What about this card (52T Mantle Don't-Call-it-a-Rookie Card) keeps it getting assigned a number grade (if you don't mind me asking)?

The thing about not calling it a rookie card has to do with SGC labeling the 1952 Topps Mantle as a rookie when his actual rookie is the 1951 Bowman. As far as why the card didn't get a numerical grade, you would have to ask the owner, but I'm guessing that it's either trimmed or altered in some way. Hope that helps.

I totally agree. That does not look like a fair grade at all (unless some serious damage to reverse). I'd consider re-submission.

There's nothing wrong with the reverse at all, but if you compare the overall condition to the PSA 2 Reese I posted, I'm guessing that it wouldn't grade any higher than a PSA 1.5 if I resubmitted it.

Well this is the show off thread right? I was thinking about trying to put together the entire 1952 Topps set, but after how much I spent on those seven cards alone I can't imagine still having 400 more to go!

Well if it's any consolation, most of the 400 remaining cards will be cheaper than each of the 7 that you just picked up.

Man those are some nice pick-ups.

Richard.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm not quite sure if I have the patience (or budget) to go for the entire set. Those are the 7 best cards in the set IMO, so I might might take a break from '52 Topps for a while. My savings account needs some time to recover after getting shell shocked like that in one week anyway so I'll have some time to decide what direction I want to go in.

BIN pickup from Joe's Vintage. Centering is tough, but I never been the biggest stickler for centering. Joe's is def one of my favorite sellers on EBAY.
