Default Is this Ruth? 1935 Muratti Cigarette

I searched the board and did not see this card discussed before.
The 1935 German Muratti Cigarette card of Olympic swimmer Dorothy Poynton supposedly pictures Babe Ruth standing next to her.
The card is cataloged as picturing Ruth.
The more I look at the image, the more the man doesn't look like Ruth to me.

Attached are a couple of images.
Curious to see what everyone thinks about this card.

Andy

I see the resemblance but I agree it doesn't look like Ruth to me.

Default Hey Andy

Hey Andy
I hope all is well for you. I love this board s/w and added a poll to this thread. Hope that was ok? For the record, I voted probably yes but not sure (I am an optimist) best regards

Yes. He was in Cali and scored some damn good weed.

Some say no because Ruth has his hands in his pocket . Babe was at the Norconian Resort in Cali around the same time that Poynton and the US Olympic teams (diving and swimming) were training at the new pools. They had a popular golf course.

Thanks Leon. A poll is a great idea!
My vote gets more "no" with every look. The body type looks different to me.

Will be interesting to see what the public opinion is on the card. Lets face it, this card isn't being graded because of Dorothy.

Haven't looked at the card under the 'scope yet. Maybe Shoeless Joe is hiding in the background, too.

Andy

I think the girl looks like a Ruth, not the guy.

I say no. From the pictures I've seen, wasn't Ruth a more robust fellow by 1935? The gentlemen in the picture looks a little to thin. Maybe I'm thinking of John Goodman.

Maybe that's what he would've looked like when he was 75 but that is an old man.

If I vote no, it means one less Ruth card I need.

I think the real poll here is the swimmer - I think it might be Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Juno, etc.). with a swimmer's cap on!

If that pic is correctly 1935, no way it's Ruth. His waist alone says NO!

Not definitive, but food for thought.

The Norconian Resort watersports facility was built in 1928. Also, around that time, Babe was in LaLa Land. He'd been a frfequent visitor to So Cal and starred in two full-length films in 1927 and 1928. Also, he'd made five short films for Christy Walsh around 1929-32.

The outdoor diving and swimming pools (the only AAU qualifying pools in southern California until the outdoor pools were built in Los Angeles for the 1932 Olympics) were in constant use for exhibition matches and AAU-sanctioned competitions, and many Olympic calibre athletes swam and dove in the Norconian waters...

"Several films were shot at the Norconian, and it was not unusual to see Buster Keaton or Babe Ruth on the golf course"
