Default Help me choose my Kreindler subject from raffle #2 (and a long overdue intro)

Hello All,

I guess first I should probably tell you a little about myself. As you can see I have been a member of this fine forum for about 3 years but don't post much. I do however visit it pretty much daily. I have learned a lot and gotten to see many items that I likely won't ever own myself but enjoy seeing them anyway. I've collected baseball cards pretty much since birth. My father gave me the card collecting addiction by putting together a set from vending since my birth year (1978) until I was old enough to start doing it on my own.
My collection has different parts to it from pre-war to modern, game used, and autographs.
My pre-war collection has focused on the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association, which is why I chose the T20Brew handle.
My more modern collection is mostly player collections with Rollie Fingers being the main baseball figure. I love the history of baseball probably just as much and probably more than going to or following baseball today. I love items of Babe Ruth and other baseball figures.

Now I have the awesome task of figuring out what picture to chose for my painting.
I was thinking of maybe a Babe Ruth picture, a Rollie Fingers picture, or even something from the American Association Brewers.

Who has some good ideas?

Congrats on the win! I'd say you give Graig a little bit of a challenge...

Aaron in one of those cool old Milwaukee Braves jerseys would be cool.

Also would love to see craig's take on this:

If you go with that one, scan a picture of you as a kid or a son/nephew/cousin/father as a kid and have him incorporate it as one of the faces in the crowd.

For some reasom, it already looks like a lot of the heads are photo-shopped in.

Not sure why, but it has a "cut and paste" look... a lot like the Sgt. Peppers Album Cover. Especially in the foreground...

There's always the Mad Russian, Lou Novikoff, though probably not the most picturesque Brewer...

Great suggestion!

Although my initial suggestion was a bit tongue-in-cheek, it would be an amazing image in Kreindlercolor™.

The first time I saw that image was in Ken Burns' Baseball documentary, and they presented it by showing a super close-up of Ruth's grinning face, then slowly panning out (in typical Burns style) to reveal all the anxious kids surrounding the Babe.

Simply a perfect capture of a moment in time, when things were much simpler, and Babe Ruth was the most popular athlete on the planet.

I think the image appears photoshopped due to the high contrast and amazing quality of black and white photography. When you get a good photographer, the right lighting, and a decent camera, you'd be amazed at the quality of vintage photography.

Good ideas. I am originally from WI around Green Bay, so I'm a transplant to MN. I am a Twins fan, as long as they aren't playing the Brewers .

A lot of good ideas so far. I'd say a few are in the running already. I feel fortunate I get to make such a tough choice.

OK, Milwaukee it is. Found a few interesting ones. With you being a relatively younger guy, I though of Yount, and for 1975 collectors, Yount and Brett. And the stash.

Eric,

If we stick with Ruth, do you have any preference as to the time period with his career?

Here are some nice shots of him with Boston that would fit the size really well:

And a nice one of him with New York in 1921:

Just some suggestions.

For the record, I don't know if it was one you were seriously considering, but the shot of him with all of the kids faces would probably be too much for a 20" x 28" canvas, but if you had your heart set on it, then I'm sure we could work something out.

Either way, hope this gives you a couple of ideas!

Graig

I've always thought that this is the quintessential shot of The Babe. This one has it all...

Yankee Pinstripes, majestic pose, watching one sail into the right field stands. When you look at this image, you can only assume one end result... Home Run

I think of all the suggestions so far, the one I would enjoy seeing most is how Graig would capture the sunlight hitting (and reflecting off of?) Fingers' freshly-waxed handlebar mustache

That Paige image it beautiful. I would love to see that painted (even if it isn't for t20brew). I really like the pictures with two stars and the Babe/Lou bear hug picture is my favorite so far given your interests. I haven't see a brewer picture that stands out yet, hopefully we see some better mustache pictures soon.

It's tough but I think I have it down to less than a handful of photos. There are so many great photos out there. I'll try and post the final few in the next few days. I have my family coming to our house this weekend. My father passed the collecting gene to me so I'm going to get his input also since he'd enjoy it also.

In the meantime feel free to post other photos. I can definitely be swayed at this point. 😃

Eric,
If you give us the name of the last three, maybe we can add to those subjects.

eric,
Here is my last posting. Good choice. Babe Ruth.
I have a story about Babe, told to me by a good friend named Mike. The story is about Mike's father.
His father grew up in Detroit close to then, Bennett field. He used to go down to the games and stand outside the fence that surrounded the parking lot that the players would keep their cars. There, they could catch a glimpse of the players on their way out.
On this day, the Yankees were in town, and they (Mike,s father and a friend) wanted to get a look at the Babe. Sure enough the game ended, and their wait was rewarded. Out came the Babe. The Babe noticed the two boys and walked up to the fence, asking the boys, "did you see the game"? They shook their heads no, the Babe then bellowed, "Come on with me". He walked the 2 youths around the fence, and into the stadium, and soon found themselves on the outfield grass by the warning track. The Babe walked and talked with them from foul pole to foul pole. Mike's father always said that it was one of the most memorable moments in his youth. I was fortunate to know Mike's father, one of the most respected Commanding police Officers on the Department.
In my eyes, there can't be enough paintings to pay respect to Babe Ruth.

Bill

That's a great story. I've always looked at Babe Ruth at the biggest sports star of all time. Some will argue Jordan or Ali, but for me it's Ruth.

Default Made my choice 😀

Alright, I've made my choice. I was all ready to send Graig a photo and he came in with one I had not seen before. I think it has a lot of character and can't wait to see how Graig brings it to life.

Nice choice! I love Graig's paintings that have a dugout in the background.

Awesome choice! Lots of light and shadow stuff going on there that Graig will have fun working his magic with, and that will look awesome once he's done with it. And it's got pinstripes!

Nice! Cool expression by Ruth, and those bats are going to look sweet in color.
