Default 1952 Topps Mantle

I just picked up a 52 Mantle. The card has one light crease on the front. Centering, corners, edges and surface are 8 caliber. The back is a mess.
Came out of a scrapbook and not well. missing about 20+% of the back.
Would a card like this have a shot at a grade above a 1? If not, am I better off getting an A? Or would that lead people to believe that it is trimmed as well?
I appreciate any feedback.
Lou

Can you throw up a F/B scan of it?

With the back being bad---I would think a 1 is the best you can get---I sent in quite a few Mayo's to SGC and anything with a little problem on the back, the card received a 1 no matter what the front looked like---and I would say the same for psa---The way 1952 Mantles are so hot the last year or so, I would still say you would get a nice price for a graded 1.

Default Image of front

I posted the image of the front AND the back of the card on my store Facebook page.

Thanks for the input.

@Loubrown--- this is the image you are showing, I did not see a BACK image, its needed to see what the damage is.
I read another thread on the screw downs, YOU MUST get the card out of it. As stated, it could stick to the holder over time, resulting in more paper loss.

Even if the back is damaged, that looks awfully sharp for a card that came out of a scrapbook if it's authentic.

With the back damage you will most likely get a 1, and it's almost certain with the additional crease. However, if and when you decide to sell it, the card will sell for a premium when compared to most 1s since the front eye appeal is so great. Nice card!

I think a car that look like that with back damage would sell for more like VG money .

Default 52 Mantle

It is real. I bought it from a long time customer who bought it in 1952 and put it in a scrapbook at that time. Not sure when he took it out but when he did, it went directly into the screwdown (and yes I have removed it - I've seen a few nice cards get damaged due to exposure in a screwdown-the last Rose RC that I had in was one of them but that was not a controlled environment. Fortunately this owner is an archivist and handles books and a lot of other paper items so that was not a problem.)

At first I didn't think it was real either, but the "crumbled border" variation of the signature box does seem to go along with the bottom yellow part of the Yankees logo not having a black border. I bet it would go for VG prices or better with that appealing of an image and overall presentation on the front. Either way, I still wouldn't be able to afford anything in the ballpark. Nice card!

Very nice looking card, and although I love mine, proud I own one, etc, etc, I think I would still rather have your's than mine just due to the front being in way better shape.

Thanks for all the input. Heading off to PSA and thinking an E-Bay auction is the way to go. I'll be sure to post when it goes up.

Thought I would follow up on this. The Mantle card came back as an A.
Planned on auctioning it. Listed at $15,900. Gone within 12 hours!

Good for you!

PSA didn't give it a number, just Authentic?

Also, seeing as I'd like to get mine graded, did it cost you $700 for PSA to do so?

Was $15,900 your highest bid or is that what you listed it for?

Thanks.

Very nice! Pretty strong price considering the crease, the back damage, and the authentic grade. Although a year from now this comment may be obsolete.

That sale is mind-blowing.
Makes me start to wonder? For those of us that have one, Time to sell?? or hold onto it, since we not need to sell??
For those that missed it, MattyC has his incredible 4.5 for sale at 200k.

Aah, the million dollar question?

If I were looking to sell mine, it would be a great time based on the exchange rate with the CDN dollar.

First it will need to be graded obviously for maximum money, then comes the hard part, like you, do I sell or keep it?
