Default 1977 Topps

8 cards today and more coming this week. I hope to be done by the end of this month.

Then onto the 1978 Topps set……

I've begun to work on Topps Baseball sets from 1970 and 1972. So far, I've purchased a 1972 starter set off eBay and have deals worked out for another starter set from a member on this site. Both are missing a considerable amount of high numbers and stars.

I began to purchase and trade for the 70s set though here and off of eBay. I also have a deal worked for some stars and high numbers, it's just a matter of sending the funds. What I need is a fairly comprehensive starter set of 550-600+ cards in excellent to near-mint condition. There have been a few on eBay, but the asking prices are high for the quality of the cards.

The 1971 set was easy to assemble and somewhat difficult to upgrade. The prices of the semi and semi-high numbers for 70 and 72 will have to go at a slower pace due to the prices and the number of missing cards in each set.

There are three Dodger team sets I’m working on that are all down to just one card to go. Technically a full Diamond Stars team set would include both Mungo cards (1934 #19 and 1936 #102), but I’m satisfied with just one.

Missing cards are T205 Wilhelm, Diamond Stars Babich, and Bowman Reese.

Congrats on all the progress you've all made. Ed congrats on the '77 set, it was the first set I was really able to go after completing as a kid so holds a special place in my heart. I just picked up these and now I'm down to just one more card for my '62 set.

Hi Bob, the last Mohican is #320 Hammerin' Hank. I'm finding this card difficult to find well centered at a reasonable price. I'm putting together the master set with green tints and variations.

I have 6 or 7 of the aluminum printing plates that don't fit my collection. I bought them not 100% sure if they were legit, but from my research they're somewhat common in '62s. I'm not much of a '60s collector so you'd know way more than I regarding them. Five or six are team cards and one is the Boyer with someone else horizontal card. Since you're going after a master set they might fit well so let me know if interested.

Default 1954 Bowman

This is the first baseball set from the fifties I've ever built and decided to go with one that had fewer cards as an entry point. What a great set and honestly, I think, undervalued in regards to the top HOFers. The Mays, Williams and Mantle are all very reasonable, especially considering they are still early releases for Mays and Mantle. The others like Berra, Matthews, Snider, Campy and Hodges were all less than $100 in presentable condition. I'm down to four cards and one of those is Mantle, but I'm being disciplined on picking up the right one for the allocated budge. My Williams is pretty rough but I really just wanted to complete it in binder for viewing and kept my budget to $2500 for the entire set. If I can pick up a Mantle that is not destroyed for ~$500 then I'll have accomplished it within budget.

I picked up 77 more cards towards the completion of my 72 set. Series 1-4 are now completed.

10 more and series 5 will be done. 71 more and the set will be finished. The 71 are all series 6.

Default Set Collectors - Report in your progress!

I rarely post in this thread, as I am rarely able to report progress like this: But today I picked up a lot of nearly 300 ‘72 commons at the LCS to add to my fledgling start that was already at home in the box. Haven’t finished cataloging all of it yet, but with today’s addition I figure I am somewhere in the neighborhood of 380 out of the 787 card set, or approaching the halfway mark.

For somebody who is not a set collector by nature, I’m not sure why I decided to go for the postwar monster as my first endeavor, LOL!

I like the color blazing 72 set. For a time I debated ending my Topps Heritage run there, but decided to hang on until 1975.... assuming Topps makes it that far

Yeah, this year's Heritage has been a nice companion. Though Lord knows I'm not going after that whole set.

Default 1954 Bowman

I'm 31 cards away from a 54 Bowman set. First post war(pre 1980) set I've ever worked on as a pre war and boxing collector. Been fun. I started a 53T set which will be my next venture and about 60% complete on it.

I just finished my 1960 Topps set. This is my second completion in less than a month, but I don't expect to finish any other sets this year.

Here is my last card:

Finished the 57 Topps set on Thursday (minus checklist) and 56 Topps on Friday. I wanted to finish them on the same day but missed the 56 Pirates team card by less than $1 on eBay. Here are the final two from the sets.

I aim for VGEX without creases or better on my set builds. I’d say a good 80% of my vintage set builds are in that range. I need less than 1000 cards to finish 1953-2022 and 265 to finish 1952 including all the high numbers.

Nicely done Jay on completing the 56 & 57 sets.

I just completed the 61 Golden Press set.
I need a few more cards to complete the 69 Topps Deckle set.
Just thought a couple of small sets would do the trick after the last few sets.

Not sure when I last posted in this thread but in the past six months or so I finished dealing with the '67 baseball set with a few upgrades of early series cards. I had thought it would be fun to have some of my original '67s as part of the set but with a few heavily creased cards they really stuck out even with my relaxed standards in set completion.

Also completed four football sets. the '65, '66, and '67 Philly Gum sets to go along with the '64 I had. And I started and completed the '59 Topps set. That was an easy one.

At the moment, outside of my slow and not very inspired chase of the '75T mini set, I'm more or less on the sidelines. I've got a stack of '64T baseball on my desk at the moment and I've thought about doing that set for a long time but I'm just not up for another set adventure at the moment.

With the addition of Cloyd Boyer, I'm now two away from a '52 low number set - Pafko and Mays. Not sure exactly how to tackle the Willie with two kids in college at the moment.

On the '64T front, I'm also two cards away. Just needing #482 Phillies RC (Briggs and Cater) and 491 Rakow. Hoping to close this one out shortly.

As with all my vintage sets, looking to keep them in the VG-Ex range and no MC.

Thanks I appreciate that. I will have no problem finishing out 53 and on - there are a couple of 4 figure cards I still need from 53 on but not many - 53 Mantle, 54 Aaron (only 54 I have left), 55 Clemente - that might be it. I guess 53 Paige is close to that number but I have the 53 Jackie and Mays and every Mantle from 56 on.

52 is a different story - I put $25 per check away for the mantle - got around $2500 in there. I told my wife when I retire I'll work an extra 6 months past normal retirement age to buy it. Was hoping to finish out the run by then. That gives me just under 20 years. But I still need every other high number. So we will see but it could be doable.

Congrats to Jay, Anthony and Jordan.

I have a wrapper for my 1971 Greatest Moments set even though as far as I know they were never sold at retail. I have seen but do not have an empty box

Just completed my set of 1963 Topps Peel-Offs. Got my last one, Al Kaline, today.

Took me about 13 months, the last 5 needing just the Kaline. Pretty much excellent condition or better with decent centering. A mix of blank and instruction backs. One graded, Mantle, the rest raw.

Total cost was $675. The shipping was an additional $80. Only 4 duplicates that I sold for about a $3 profit.

Mike

Very slow build 1960 topps in SGC.

Currently at 22/572 3.85%
Avg grade 7.9

I try and grab a few here and there and am in no hurry to complete.

Default 1965 O Pee Chee

I was able to pick up these 5 nice cards that I needed for my 1965 OPC set. Only 63 left to go until it's finished...

Default 52 Topps

August was a good month for my 1952 Topps PSA 6 +/- set. I was able to pick up these guys...

The SGC cards will eventually be cracked and subbed to PSA soon...

And hopefully my raw card grading eye is good enough to get 6's on these when they get sent in too...

25 more cards added to the binder. About 40 more to go. Getting close on 53.

What a great looking Yaz card. And Gaylord is a toughie. Whenever I see that card, it looks as though his hand is too big for the glove - can't get his thumb in. Wonder if he just picked up some middle infielder's glove for the photo.

I never noticed that but it's true. Looks like he's wearing a Little Leaguer's glove.

I’m sure this may have been covered in a separate thread, but what are the principals to follow when starting out building a set.

Buy the best condition cards you can one/two at a time?

Buy partial sets in varying condition?

I’m working on both the 1960 and 1972 topps set so any specific advice related to these collections would be much appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving
