Default May pickups

I guess one of these is technically an April pickup. But as it's now May, I'm going forth. Got these for the high-end Fisk run, and scored the 1975 Topps from a fellow board member (in fact it was another fine transaction with Steve Wilk).

Nice Fisks..I have both of those cards somewhere, but not in that condition. I know I opened more 1978 packs than any other year. The local Stop-n-Go couldn't keep them in stock. Here's another 56 Topps..

Like Carl's Fisks, this was technically an April purchase (via REA), but since I don't post much on Post-WWII, I thought I would this time.

I've been after this card in at least this grade for some time- lately, I have missed several copies at lower prices and just decided to bit the bullet and get one- and these have REALLY gone up in price...PSA will have to adjust their SMR.

I did miss out on a cool 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson...maybe later.

Not sure how much is pre-1980 or if any even counts as a pickup, but here is the fun I'll have tonight.

Following Court Order (!), my ex is finally returning my largely junk era collection to me. I am trying to remember just how many 1990 UD Kevin Maas cards I'll find, but I also THINK somewhere in the mix is an autographed Oakland Oaks card of Mel Ott. No matter what, will be fun just flipping through it all.

Awesome Satchell! I picked one up last year in a PSA 2 that was semi affordable, but I have been very impressed with the ones posted on the board lately. Nice grab.

I've wanted this card since I've watched a a show on QVC or home shopping.
I don't remember but it was the dude with the mustache that yelled for no reason. I loved watching that back in the day.

They opened some product they were pushing. But you would get a certain amount of cards from certain years. And they pulled this out of one of the boxes.
I've never seen until that moment.i have tried to buy it at card shows and sellers always want a hundred something to a few hundred. Ebay is a different story!

Here are the highlights from Box 1 of my old collection, just tonight returned to me by my ex. Had been buried so long I'd forgotten about most of it, so I'm treating these as pickups.

8x10s of favorite players...the Musial and FRobby were signed in person. I think I bought the Mize at a show.

Hundreds of Kirk Gibson cards...his 88 WS HR was the best moment of my first 20 years on Earth.

Some semi-old stars in plastic sheets.

About 1000 BASF Laker cards of Magic and Kareem.

Dodger WS programs and the first 5 Mad Magazines.

1984 Donruss set in binder plus unopened boxes of 1988 Score (!) and Conlon's "The Babe Ruth Collection." Also an unopened rack pack with Mattingly RC showing.

Postcards from my trip to the Brett/Ryan/Yount induction + various singles + old baseball cards of...me!

Nice '53 Pete! And with the recent '51, you're on quite a roll.

A big shout out to Bob (begsu1013) for making this beauty available to me. Paper loss on the back accounts for the grade, but I just couldn't pass up the eye appeal of the front. Can't wait for it to show up! I'm pretty pumped about this one.

And at the bottom of the box...a 1952 Mother's Cookies Mel Ott (signed, no less!) and some stars of the Golden Age.

Picked up this one, and the 54 I posted in the April thread, from sports-cards-forever on Ebay. This was my first time dealing with him, and it proved to me that there are still Ebay sellers out there with great cards at fair prices.

Default The Eagles Have Landed

I didn't think I would ever own a 52T Mantle. But like Jesse stated above I found a dealer on ebay who was reasonable based on all of the other 52's I've looked at. I decided to sell a bunch of other cards to help fund these 2.

Nice pick ups guys. I picked up a few cards recently. Nothing outstanding but I liked how clean this '51 Maglie was.

Forgive the picture quality. I literally just picked these up and I'm not near a scanner.

Awesome cards Joe, great eye appeal. These two just arrived today from the MattyC collection. I'm pretty excited about them both.

Thanks. I will let Matt speak for himself but I doubt he would have parted with this one without a replacement. It's the nicest 7 I've seen for a 62.

Great question! I picked it up at a show around 1990 when I was trying to collect Brett's whole career. I don't think the dealer had much to tell me either. Here is the back in case it helps anyone else figure out what it is.

The mystery continues...I thought some quick internet searches would reveal the story behind the card. However, I drew total blanks. And under the assumption the card was issued in 1980 or 1981, it didn't even turn up as part of the "Most Complete George Brett Collection of All Time!--

96 down, 4 to go on my Top 100 display. The centering isn't great, but the price was good, and it came with some freebies.

I agree, and if it weren't for the staining on the back, I would guess a 3 minimum or 4 more likely?

Great Freebies! What list do you use for your top 100? Seems like a pretty good project I may be interested in! (I'm currently gathering HOF RCs)

Thanks!

Thanks. Let's just hope the 41PB doesn't come with "Made in Taiwan" stamped across it like the scan showed.

I didn't go by just a single list but based my selections on a few different ones (Sporting News, ESPN, SABR) + some subjectivity from being a fan. Here is the full story and listing if you're interested--https://jasoncards.wordpress.com/2015/12/08/my-final-baseball-card-project-probably/

This was the first Jackie Robinson card I ever acquired. It was one of the first cards I bought when I got back into collecting. I'm happy to have added it back to my collection (the EXACT same card nonetheless - I submitted it way back when).

Also added this one:

Forgot this. Not a card, but post-war. Has full JSA letter. I believe the check was filled out by Rachel before Jackie signed.
