Just quickly looking over the winning bids including buyers premium. I was surprized that lot 692 Ruth Ball Auto graded 9 signature got no bids with a min. of $ 10000. LOA's from PSA/DNA and JSA. Why ?

Lot 703 T206 Cobb (Green) EX only $3,600. I think the consignor would have gotten a better deal selling himself on Ebay.

Any other opinions of which items sold at lower and higher than expected prices ?

It's not prewar, but I'm surprised the PSA 4.5 1952 Topps Mantle "only" went for $10,000. The T205 Hoblitzell no stats at $3500 seemed a bit low as well.

This is NO dig at Mastro. it wasnt to long ago when every major auction was $10M +, is it the economy or the lots? when i say the "lots" what i am specifically refering to are high dollar rare cards and the amount of them.

ps. a side note, i noticed the prices at Memory Lane, they actually seemed to be pretty fair and some very good buys. i am specifically refering to 1935 National Chicle Football cards that were Mint.

One of the most shockingly high prices was the A35 Goodwin Round Album that went for $39,000 with the juice. And it was missing the grommet. What was that all about? Nice ones are usually in the 12K-15K range.

Overall I thought prices were strong on the lots I was watching, but didn't scour the whole catalog.

Rand:

Mastro just recently started doing their Live Auctions IN ADDITION to these. I don't recall the total prices realized for their recently concluded Live auction, but a better indication would be to add that LIVE total to the $5 million realized from last night.

The breadth of material and quality of consignments from both combined are more comparable to their Catalogue Auctions of 3 - 4 years ago. Just my opinion...

What I did find startling were the huge number of "Conoisseur" Lots that went unsold. That portion of the Auction looks like a disaster. Either Mastro set their reserves way too high, or the economy for those pieces has completely tanked (or both). I wonder if they will even bother with the Conoisseur portion next time... I would think consignors will be scared away. Check out the percentage of unsold lots... especially with regard to the dozens of perfume bottles, attache cases, silk ties, etc.

The lots I followed had decent hammer prices - nothing incredible (with a few exceptions), but nothing shockingly low either.

I lost the J=K Lajoie that I also lost 2 years ago in another auction. Went for about $2300 2 years ago and now $6K with juice. My comic book I consigned I got killed on. Paid $1K and it realized $475. Dan.

Dan, when you've got unique or nearly unique cards I can't imagine that the bad economy will have that much of an impact because there are always a couple of people with enough money to drive the bidding up; however, on items that are easily found - no matter the grade - I think you're seeing a real impact on values. For example, look at the T206 Green Cobb PSA 5 that sold for $3600.

If the buyer of Lot 1350 -- 1916 "H" and "D" Rare and Obscure Brands Graded Collection (12 Different), is interested in selling the Burgess-Nash Co. #176 Turner, I'm interested.

And if the buyer of Lot 616 -- 1934 D382 "Tarzan - Thoro Bread" BVG-Graded Collection (10 Different), is interested in selling the Willie Kamm, my checkbook is out and pen is poised.

Thanks,

Rob

I think it's a combination of the economy and the fact that Babe Ruth single signed baseballs in high grade are kind of common now.

There's a rule that every catalog and auction company (and they are indeed growing in quantity) MUST have at least fifteen single signed baseballs now it seems.

I'm not commenting on this one, but could the Babe still be signing?

As far as comic books...bargains were indeed had there.

DJ

Hey Guys, I thought the above card went for a cheap price since it is a Ruth 8 and 1 of 1. What does everyone else think. With the juice it came out to 25k. signed fessgreg

Canadian Goudeys have never been that popular. While the card may be rare in high grade, so is the collector.

Personally, I thought that was a very stron price for the card. I would prefer to have an R319 1933 (American) Goudey #149 Ruth in EX-MT or NM.

A quote from DJ: "I'm not commenting on this one, but could the Babe still be signing?".
Of course he could and is.
There is a famed auction house that has at least 10-15 Babe Ruth signed items every auction. Somebody is signing those items.

Lot 692 Ruth single signed baseball is 100% authentic. The ball reached 39,000 after the BP which is a strong price. The 10,000 was the MB. Curious what the reserve was.
