Default A bit OT: My 19th Century Baseball Team in the NY Times

I thought some of you might enjoy reading a recent NY Times article about my vintage baseball team, the NY Gothams. A reporter and photographer came to Governors Island two weekends ago and put together a nice story. If anyone is interested in playing with us let me know!

I saw that article Ben, and I live just a few minutes walk from the ferry. My wife and I try to go to Governor's Island once each summer. Will you be playing there again?

That's very cool.

Makes me think of the classic Conan bit:

Yeah, thats a funny segment. That was filmed at Old Bethpage, Long Island. We play there several times a year. Conan visited the year before I joined the Gothams.

Barry & Greg-

Here is a link to our 2012 schedule -

http://www.zyworld.com/gothambaseball/2012.htm

Any games that say "New York City" should be played at Old Bethpage. If you want a heads up about our upcoming games you can join our meetup group by visiting the following -

http://www.meetup.com/New-York-Gothams-Baseball-Club/

As I said earlier, all are welcome to play and/or watch!

Ben,
That is a GREAT photo on the article. Would be a nice team piece to get a high resolution image from the author, crop out the high rise buildings in the back, and then make it a black and white piece.

Very cool! Nice to see vintage base ball in the major media outlets. There will likely be a few games to watch in or around most cities this weekend with the 4th coming up. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

Ben, that's great!
I went to a tournament last July in Gettysburg, was your team there.
Had a lot of fun. The players took it serious and it seemed very authentic.

Whoops! Good catch! All games that say New York City should be played at Governors Island. Sorry for the mistake. The following games should be played at Governors Island:

July 14 vs. Flemington Neshanock BBC

July 28 vs. Mutual BBC of New York

August 25 vs Atlantics BBC of Brooklyn

Hi Jay. We haven't played in Gettysburg but I'm going to suggest it to my teammate who arranges the games. It would certainly be a great place to play. Was this in conjunction with the annual July reenactment?

Great article, Ben. I too play vintage ball by 1867 rules. No bound, and the stealing rules are a bit different too. Went to Old Bethpage this spring for the vintage baseball national conference. Great place for a game. Glad to hear there is another vintage ballist on the board!

Best,

Andy

No, it was a couple of weeks later and a few miles from the battlefields and the town of Gettysburg.
The tourney was in a large field surrounded by a rural area w/ farms.
It seemed more authentic this way, then at a high school field or a park w/ scoreboards, dugouts & such.
The Gettysburg anniversary is actually now, since the battles took place, July 1-3 1863. The town will be a mob scene from last weekend till this coming weekend.
