Default 1952 Topps

I am under 10 cards left to complete my 1952 Topps set. All high #'s.....5 commons, some stars...but I have the Mantle. In addition, I have 6 or 7 gray backs and a number of variations.

I'm a set collector with a goal to have a complete base set from every year.

I'm complete with that goal back to 1951 (Includes 1955 Bowman and Topps, 1954 Bowman and Topps, 1953 Topps, 1952 Bowman and 1951 Topps Red and Blue)

Now working on the 1950 Bowman set. Need just 17 cards to finish.

17 Sid Hudson
18 Eddie Robinson
19 Warren Spahn
20 Bob Elliott
21 Pee Wee Reese
22 Jackie Robinson
23 Don Newcombe
24 Johnny Schmitz
25 Hank Sauer
26 Grady Hatton
27 Herman Wehmeier
28 Bobby Thomson
29 Ed Stanky
32 Robin Roberts
33 Ralph Kiner
34 Murry Dickson
35 Enos Slaughter

I just picked up #223 in my signed 1953 Topps set (Bobo Newsom). My other signed set project, which has been mothballed for now, is a 2007 Dunkin Donuts PawSox set. The sets were given out as a promotion, and I've never seen them signed other than the ones I have. I was able to get to 24/30 TTM, and added Jon Lester about 2 years ago through a Steiner signing. I don't think I'll be able to complete it because infielder Ed Rogers has evidently retired back to his native Dominican Republic, and I don't have a way to get in touch with him there.

Might was well update mine:

The 1953 Topps project is up to 251. I’ve picked up all of the low hanging fruit by now; the remaining ones I need are either difficult, expensive, or both. I’ve confirmed through PSA/DNA’s population report that examples of each exist, though there are about half a dozen that I have never seen pictures of, let alone come up for sale. Beyond those, there are another eight or so that I’ve seen in the collections of others, but never on the market.

My PawSox project remains on the back burner; I can probably add Kevin Cash next spring, but the others (Jacoby Ellsbury, Brandon Moss, George Kottaras and Ed Rogers) don’t sign through the mail and I haven’t seen any signings with them in ages, so I’ve hit a wall there.

Although it won't fit into my binder, with this high number Sam McDowell I thee complete my 1962 master set. Definitely need a bunch of upgrades (recently discovered my Aaron has a pen mark on back, etc.), but all the cardboard fish are now in the boat...

I pulled the PawSox project out of mothballs to pick up George Kottaras at a recent signing. He was my first addition in over seven years. Of the remaining ones I need, I can probably get Kevin Cash the easiest; Ed Rogers is unlikely, and I have not seen a signing recently with Brandon Moss or Jacoby Ellsbury.

Just completed a near mint 1971 set with all keys in PSA 7 holders. What a beast. 20% in on 1957 but finding it hard to find near mint lots as I love to buy, merge, upgrade, and purge. Last weekend I impulse bought complete 1960 and 1965 sets, which I'm going to tear down and rebuild. 1960 set arrived and is mostly sharp but 1965 is going to require a lot of work if I decide to keep it. Last night I bought a 213 near mint lot of 1960s so let the upgrading begin! I love examining the cards and deciding the condition winners and the losers. If I can't decide my wife is the tie breaker.

I have the best wife ever. I received my first Old Judge (Brooklyn, Smith batting) in the mail today from Old Judge (thanks, Old Judge!) and she liked the card so much she said, "Are there more?" Oh, yes dear, there are more. There are more.

I just bought the Mantle (which I will post on the Mantle thread when it arrives), and last month, Todd gave me a great deal on 29 of the high numbers (including a few of the toughies) I needed, so I'm down to around a dozen commons and the Seaver. I had almost given up on ever finishing this set, but thanks to Todd, I am hopeful that I can put this thing to bed relatively soon, depending on being able to find the cards I need at a decent price.

In the pre-war, updated counts are for 1933 Goudey need is now 29, 34 Goudey need 19, 34-36 Diamond Stars need 19, 1939 Play Ball need 8, and 1940 Play Ball need 11.

Also working on the Kelloggs run and only need 16 from the tough 1971 set and 2 from the 1972 set.

Finally, have started on the 1948-49 Leaf set - only the non-short prints - need 15 of those.

I'm currently collecting a complete Topps base card run of Braves players, starting from 1951. I am currently 95 cards short of reaching my goal. I have everything from 1959 to today, minus 6 Aaron's.

Having received #2 Tom Seaver from the 1971 set today - marking the completion of the Kellogg's run - I am checking in on my set building progress.

The Bowman run seems stuck on the final 5 cards in the 1949 set. They include the Big 3 (Robinson, Paige, Snider) but also two other toughies: Preacher Roe and Dave Ferriss.

I have been making great progress on the pre-war front (low to mid-grade):
- 1933 Goudey need 13 (including Lajoie)
- 1934 Goudey need 12
- 1934-36 Diamond Stars need 11
- 1939 Play Ball need 2 (including Williams)
- 1940 Play Ball need 3 (including DiMaggio and Shoeless Joe)
- 1941 Play Ball is complete

I have completed almost every Robert Laughlin related set out there - still seeking the "Erorrs" set and the "Sports Slang" set. PM me if you have a line on either of those.

The hunt continues!

Finished off my '62 baseball and '70 basketball sets and swore I'd take a break from serious set chasing. But that didn't work out.

At the local hotel show last month I came across a nice 1961 starter lot in a binder for under 60 cents a card. Added a really cheap lot via eBay (nice condition for the price!) and find myself about 60% through with it already. A bit less than that for the higher cost star cards.

My other set builds have taken a back seat and are creeping along.

Haven't checked back in on this thread in a long time. Funny to see the progress since my last post. I have completed the 1933 Goudey except for the second Gehrig and the Lajoie. 1934 Goudey is done except for Greenberg. Diamond Stars is done except for 3 high numbers (99/105/108). I have the Play Balls except the 39 Williams, 40 Dimaggio and 40 Shoeless Joe. I consider all these "done" - except for the Diamond Stars - as the remaining cards are too darned expensive.

In the mean time, I started collecting variations. For example, I have all but 3 of the 1958 "yellow letters", the entire 62 green tint set, and all but 1 of the 69 "white letters". I have also picked up the other standard variations across the mainstream post-war sets with a couple of exceptions like the 55 Bowman Kuenn (name spelled correctly); the 58 Loes (no trade) and the 67 Topps Gomez and Belinsky stat line misprints.

I have also started in on some of the older small sets like the 1948 Swell Sports Thrills, 1951/1952 Berk Ross, 1952 Wheaties, 1960 Leaf (need 4), and 1968 Milton Bradley. And some of the less popular inserts from the 1960's like the 1965 Transfers and 1966 Rub-Offs. And working on, but not expecting to complete, the 1962 and 1963 Jello sets. Its interesting to see how much variation there was in the population across these sets, which are not reflected very well if at all in Beckett pricing.

PM me if you have any of the things I have mentioned here and are interested in selling/trading. As always, happy hunting to all my fellow set collectors!

Wow, my thread from way back is still alive. I dropped out of the card world for a bit there (classic car collecting kills card budgets...lol), but I AM BACK. Excited to be back as well. I sold all my sets 1967 and older (turned them into a completely restored 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint to add to that collection), and kept my 1968 to 1990 Topps sets. Currently working on 66 and 67 at the same time and just made some purchases to get me going (jumped right back into the deep end of the 60's pool..lol). So happy to be back, I missed it terribly. I can say though taking the break I did has really re-kindled my love of the hobby. Looking forward to joining back into the fray...right in time for spring training.

Thanks all!

As one of those bucket list items that I started a few years ago, I'm putting together sets from 1969 to 1980. I have 1971-1980 complete with around 25 to go on the 1969 set and 80 cards or so from the 1970 set. The stats are in my sig, but I still need to update it slightly but it's still close. I bought the 1980 and 1975 sets, but everything else was put together. I also bought a complete 1976 SPCC set, which are very nice. I look at those way more than the 75s.

The 1975 set is mid-grade but I don't mind. My 72 and 73 sets are somewhat surprisingly decent looking in the binders, 74, 76-80 are in pretty much excellent condition. The 1971 set is the roughest, and will be the first set I start to upgrade once I complete them all. As ugly as I thought the 1972 set was, once you get it into the binder it's a really great looking set. I was kind of disappointed in the 1975 set. The colors are different, but I think it's too loud and the pictures are marginal IMO.

The 1974 set is one of my favorites. I had a bunch of them as a kid so I was familiar with 25% of the set. I really liked the 1973 cards as a kid, and I still like that year. My 1976 set has a few cards signed by Oakland A's players back when I was doing that 13 years ago or so. Bert Campanaris, Joe Rudi, Sal Bando, Gene Tenace, Al Dark. The 1978 is my personal favorite, being the first year I collected sports cards as a 9 year old. I liked 1980 when it came out since it had a 74 vibe to it, but 1979 is one of those years where familiarity breeds contempt. I bought so many that year and looked at them so much.

Now I'm pretty much down to HOFers and SP high numbers for 69 and 70. I need Nolan Ryan for both sets, 70 Clemente, 69 Seaver, 70 Aaron, etc. I'm not picky on condition but I know at some point I'll have to bite the bullet on the Ryans.

great thread

I have completed a couple sets already this year surprisingly. just finished the 64 Topps giants, have a couple sent out for grading and will probably upgrade a couple that aren't graded, should all be graded PSA/SGC 7 or better. finished my 70 Topps finally and 75 mini.

I'm trying for 51 to present, so all I have is time. I have a lot of sets started, completed my 52 low numbers, earlier this year, and picked up a few hi numbers (no mantle yet).

I have been focused on my 55, 56, 57 Topps. down to 5 big ones for the 55, aaron, robinson, clemente, mays and berra. 15 for the 56 and 11 for the 57. hopeful to keep those moving in the right direction. then on to finish my 53, 59 topps and 55 bowman.

close on the 69 topps (10 cards) and 71-72 under 100 each.

love hearing what other people are collecting and how they are making out with their sets.

good luck all

Trying to finally put to bed my 1961 Topps set. Still need these tough cards in nice shape:
***1961*** (ex. mt. - sharp corners and decently centered)
2 (Maris), 160 (Ford), 287 (Yastrzemski), 344 (Koufax), 417 (Marichal), 425 (Berra), 430 (Mazeroski), 472 (Berra MVP), 489 (Dropo), 528 (Ramos), 544 (Thomas), 577 (Aaron AS), 579 (Mays AS), 580 (Kaline AS), 586 (Ford AS)

I have plenty of tough 1961 high numbers to trade, plus a wide variety of big stars and HOF'ers from other years. Everything can be seen in my bucket(s).

Hit me up if you think we could put together a deal.

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

After a couple of bulk purchases, I've started the 1957 and 1965 Topps baseball sets. I'm at 284/407 on the 1957s and 397/598 on the 1965s.

Just finished the 63 set as my wife bought me the Rose RC for Father’s Day. It’s the first pre-1980’s set ive completed so I’m excited. I have good progress on 54, 67, 68. I think I’ll work on 68. I need the Ryan RC but high numbers aren’t crazy like 67. I need a break from paying obscene amounts for high numbers.

Edit to say I’ll work on 54 as well. I have all the expensive cards except Aaron - Banks, Kaline, Williams x2, Jackie, Mays, etc. just have to wait on the Aaron.

Congratulations on the 63 set. Great to have a wife who is understanding about your interests.

Default Down to 6 = Father’s Day Update

My wife “gets me” and my baseball card collection.
Today she gifted me with the remainder of the 1952 Topps set. (My version, like several others does not include the silly 52T high numbers)
The final five fifty two’s were pretty tough ones:
#1 Pafko, Spahn, Billy Martin, Bob Lemon, Rizzuto and tough Early Wynn!

So now I just need these 6 cards to finish 1952-1980:
  • 1963 Pete Rose (not a fan, and this is an ugly, expensive card)
  • 1966 Horace Clarke (silly hi number alert, I did not enjoy collecting these!)
  • 1966 Twins Team ( see above)
  • 1967 Norm Cash (hi number, but a pretty set)
  • 1967 Brooks Robinson (probably my next purchase, great card)
  • 1968 Nolan Ryan (waiting for low grade, decent eye appeal for this easy to find card)

It will be good to finish these last half dozen this year (maybe)
Thanks to Wifey!

I am now down to one card to complete my 1952 Topps set. I bet that probably nobody would be able to guess what card it is.

It is a high number, but not one of the ones you might think.
