Default New to Pre-War - Cardinals fan

Well, I'm leaving the modern prospect driven market and slowing getting into pre-war. I have always, and will continue to collect Cardinals. I've always focused on RC's, having almost completed a task of aquiring a RC of everyone to have played for the Cardinals. Still waiting on the right deal for a 52 Hoyt Wilhelm though.

I'm joining here to learn about the different issues and look forward to learning all I can to make myself an educated buyer/trader. I've decided to start with the T206 set, Cardinals only. Looks like 18 cards, though I haven't decided what I want to do about backs.

Thank you in advance to everyone who imparts their knowledge on here.

Geoff

Welcome Geoff. This is a good place to learn about pre-war cards.....and about different sides of the hobby too. Some good, some not so good, but all are important to know. Happy collecting and if I can ever help with anything board related just shoot me a PM.....I/we are here to help. Happy collecting....

There are many great Cardinals cards available out there in the pre-war era, so have fun collecting!

I actually bought a couple of framed pieces many years ago from a Cardinals collector and even though I'm not necessarily a Cards fan, I like having these on my wall still. Good luck!

Actually, Geoff, all prewar cards of any Cardinal player were ordered to be destroyed after the 2013 season because the team was caught cheating to get to the 2013 World Series. A small price for baseball to pay but it had to be done. Made all the Cub cards worth much more because the Cubs do not cheat. LOL

You can't go wrong with Metropolitan Studio photos.
(Next to the 5'10" Mancuso, Andy High looks like he was four feet tall. Actually was 5'-6", nickname was "Knee" , 13 years in the Bigs, batted .284 lifetime. Not bad at all.)

I've got my 1st two T206's in. Low grade, but good looking examples.

Nice start! Always liked that Konetchy card.

I'm guessing the Bresnahan has back damage, right? Very nice "1"!

Yep, still has some tape on the back and a bare spot where they removed some of the tape. I'm more into the front and hope to find more in like condition.

Welcome to the forum, Geoff, from a Brewers fan.

Could you please stop kicking our butts, even if it's for just one season? I don't want to go to the grave with my only World Series memory being the Cardinals beating us in '82, with a former Brewer (Darrell Porter) winning MVP honors.

There are a lot of beautiful pre-war Cardinals for you to collect. In addition to the T206s, another manufacturer to consider would be the Goudey Gum cards of the 1930s. Some great Cardinal players from that era, including Rogers Hornsby, Dizzy Dean, Joe Medwick, and Frankie Frisch (pictured below).

Here are the two Cardinals I have in my relatively new pre-war collection thus far.

No promises, I really like the Cards dominating the Central. Not sure what your Brew Crew is doing letting Aoki go for a reliever.

As a St. Louisan I don't primarily focus on St. Louis players, but do end up with them quite often. I also enjoy that so many pre-war players have made their way through St. Louis in their careers with the AL or NL because the baseball history in St. Louis is so rich.

Is there much of a Pre War market at shows in STL? I'm down in Springfield; originally from STL, and make it up there every once in a while but haven't been to a show in years.

Most answers I would give to this are found in this thread:
Midwest Card Shows

I haven't been to shows in a couple of years not really finding stuff at the monthly shows that was new. Yet I went recently to the three day show in WestPort area since I work down the street, and I found some good deals. So I am thinking about trying the monthly show again and seeing what might be out there.

I didn't see they made a move, but I think the writing was on the wall. Braun is likely moving to right field to make room for Khris Davis in left. Gomez has center field locked down, and Caleb Gindl and Logan Schafer both offer more upside than Aoki at less money.

Still, I'll be sad to see Nori go.

Edit: Will Smith, a 6'5" lefty? He might be starter material. Doug Melvin has been pretty high on this kid. Insert your Fresh Prince jokes here...

Welcome aboard and nice pick-ups to get started. I too live in the lower grade world for the most part. You can buy a lot more cool cards if your not a grade freak. Always buy what you want, focus on eye appeal, have fun, and remember they're only cards.....
