Default Help Iding a couple Clementes

Posted By: Scott Mt Joy

Hello, I was hoping someone on these boards could help me identify a couple Roberto Clemente cards. These all came with 10-12 other pirate cards in what look like team sets.

OK this first I purchased thinking it was a Jays 58-62 and I still think it probably is. The only thing making me think maybe its not is the size is a little off. The normal Jays was 5 x 7 and this one is 4 3/4 x 7, now that said I have a lot of these and the cuts are off on a lot. The other thing is the line on the bottom border, they all have the line. Can anyone out there confirm its a Jays or another issue? Thanks

Ok next card is 4 x 7 from the 70's, I have no idea what this may be, anyone?

Ok last Picture is a 7 x 8 1/2 color pic, this one looks to me like a press photo but want to check and see if anyone can id it.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Scott

The first one is definitely a Jays. The other 2 are team issues from the stadium. c. 1970-71. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if teams keep records of the team or stadium issued cards and sets from their past?
would love to know a reliable source of info on these things.
thanks
Jason

I have to disagree with the ID of the top picture as a Jay's. Jay Publishing Co. pix always used the complete team name, i.e., Pittsburgh Pirates, rather than just the nickname, and were always issued in 5x7 format, though they could have been trimmed down post-issue.

The Standard Catalog used to list many, many more of the team-issued picture packs, but cut back when space became an issue, since they aren't "really" cards. I expect that when the catalog is issued on a CD/DVD in the near future, the picture packs and a lot of the other vintage non-card issues will be included in that format.

Thanks Bob

I checked in my 2 Standard Catalog, 1997 and 2008 and they cleared up a lot of the cards I had but not these 3. What years catalog had the more through listing of team issues? Maybe I just need to buy one of them.

Jason:

Up until 1994 or so I did a bi-annual checklist of team issued color postcards from about 1970 to that time. Your best bet now is to contact Dan Even who is an expert on team issues. I cant recall his email address but his Ebay seller title is hawklobo and you can contact him that way. He puts out a quarterly newsletter on team issues. Good luck.

The 1960+ team issues were gone by the 2006-dated catalog. I don't have any earlier volumes at hand, so don't know exactly when they disappeared.

Being an optimist, I'm going to hope that Bob has inside information from his old friends at SCD, and the Standard Catalog really is coming out in CD format soon. That would be great, especially if the quasi-cards are put back in.

The 2003 book has them.

The top is a 1965 team issue.

The middle one is a 1971-72 team issue.

The bottom one has me stumped.
