Default T206 and the no good, very bad day

I'll preface this by saying I did some considerable thinking after posting about some questionable cards to invest in. I realized I was in fact looking for the big score as a rook and decided to heed many of the vets advice on here and take it slow and steady.

I decided I'd start with T206. I've always been fascinated with the cards and since my card ventures began I have yet to see once in the flesh.

Flash forward to our story...

I had some irritation in my nose for the past couple of days. Long story short it was diagnosed as staph infection inside my nasal cavity and upper lip.

I drove down the mountain to my hometown for a doc visit only to be referred to an ear, nose, throat doc. Was told it needed to be opened up and cut out.

That was suprise number one. Suprise number two was the appt was for 3:15 (it was 12 when I left general practice office). So I had some time to kill, I grabbed lunch, headed to my parents house to find no spare key and the door locked (parents moving to charlotte).

I thought, well I've got some time to kill. Why not thrift a bit. I Google antiques and come across two malls right across the street from each other.

I find 13 T206 in a case, all St. Louis Browns, some good shape some not. Backs include Piedmont, Sweet Cap, one Sovereign, one Tolstoi.

Again I had never seen them in person let alone touched one. They are so small!!

I hashed out a deal for the sovereign, a Hobe Ferris and the Tolstoi, a Barney Pelty. The pelty was rougher with some creasing, but I loved the Tolstoi back. The ferris looks nice.

Little did I know when I went to my appt they cut inside my top lip, into my nasal cavity and got all the infection out. Worst pain I've ever felt. My lip is the size of a golfball.

Yet it wasn't that bad...because I got my first T206s.

I'll post pics tomorrow but I'm pumped about my start.

Thanks
J Ray

I got all mine with far less pain. If I went through a day like that I don't know if I'd want to see any more T206s.

I am glad they got the staph infection. However, you appear to have replaced that one with a T206 infection! The latter is a lot more fun but may also end up a lot more costly.

I am glad to hear that you found something to brighten what otherwise sounds like a pretty shitty day.

I dealt with 2 nasty staph infections within the last year, so I feel your pain (literally). With that being said, I liked the title of your thread and can't wait to see your pics!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, sounds like you had a rough day. But on the bright side it sounds like you found some really cool cards!

Default Nice story

Nice story and first foray into T206. Hopefully future acquisitions won't be on such painful days. And count me in for seeing the cards but not your lip. Recover quickly and happy collecting.

Just be happy it was in a place that can't be seen! I had to get a staph infection cut out of my cheek when I was 23.

A Tolstoi Pelty is a good find! Too bad the St. Louis is the vertical, as the horizontal would have been a real score. I would not have left without him either.

Nice pick up!

Feel better soon buddy!

Nice cards! I've found Ferris to be kind of tough to find with a Sov150 back. And that one is in pretty nice shape.

Well the silver lining and my new addiction is having a lasting effect, much like my swollen lip lol.

In my off time I've manage to pick up 6 more from members here on the board, active in a couple auctions and trying to make anther deal work.

Sick days aren't so bad!

Just make sure you don't bid on any auction while on pain meds.

Unless they are my auctions. In which case have at it.

Hah! Deal Tom, nah they are just B/S/T auctions here on the boards.

In not as bold (or my wallet) to do a real auction.

Well as the infection situation worsens my card collection grows.

I write this message to you from a hospital bed getting pumped with IV antibiotics. Turns out the staph was in its advanced form, the big brother MRSA. Hoping it clears it up in 24 hrs or I'm due for the OR.

However.....My collection that began with a meager two on Monday has grown to almost twenty I believe. Hard to keep up with the deals I've made with quite a few folks here.

Thanks to all contributing!

Sort of cool your collection is growing.....but you need to devise a way where you can do it when you aren't incapacitated.

I won't let a little pain meds stop me!! Hah

No no, I assure you all my purchases have been with a sound mind. I plan to continue purchasing steadily in the next couple of weeks; from trusted members on here and establishing a good base.

I appreciate all the comments and words of encouragement.

And an additional update health-wise. Antis overnight did the job, no scheduled surgery today. Another couple nights here though with more antis to get a leg up on the infection and I should be in the clear. Then I'll be free to roam the antique malls for more!!!!!

Heading home from the hospital today, doing much better. Now to the important matters at hand. Opening my packages and posting my new acquisitions! And to stay on the hunt!

I wanted to take the time to thank everyone for their words of encouragement and we'll wishes last week.

I'm amazed at how knowledgeable, nice and open you guys are.

A member even sent me a card for my collection which blows my mind further.

I'm certain I have found a good place to talk cards and look forward to many more great things as a collector and member of the forum.
