Other than the Standard Catalog and the Lipset book, I can add only this; the cards are on thin paper.

My over-all collection of vintage cards pales compared to most other people on this board but one thing I am proud of is my Star Player candy cards. About 10 years ago I found 16 different cards (1 uncatalogued) and the person I bought them from said his father got them in Michigan. I assume the father had them since he was a kid.

I have a limited collecting budget right now but I have to ask any way, do you have any and are they for sale?

I've got six different Star Player cards. I don't know any more than what has been posted already. I'm not sure that anyone does. I'm told that Bancroft is the only portrait in the group. These are your typical very rare but low demand cards because most people have never seen one, and they aren't all that attractive. Owning 16 of these cards would constitute perhaps the biggest hoard in existence.

I got mine from a Superior (Michigan) auction. I have no idea if the consignor came from Michigan but it's possible, and indicates there could be a Michigan connection to the origin of these cards. Or not.

BTW, mine aren't for sale.

Nothing really new to add but just emphasize one point--these cards are incredibly thin. Paper thin is really about right on them. Earlier this year there was a thread about Star Player cards sliding around in one grading companies' holders. They are very scarce--they were not even catalogued in the ACC. The Encyclodepia of Baseball Cards by Lew Lipset is about the only real source of information on them. I have a Lazzeri in my type collection.

By the way, care to mention the uncataloged card you have?

Brian

Careful, if you mention it here, it may soon become cataloged.

I picked up a few Star Players card last year, and two of the three cards I purchased had approximately the top 1/4 inch of the card missing (cut off). The seller also had several other Star Player cards that he was offering that featured tops that were cut down. When I asked why the cards were in this condition, the seller mentioned that they had been "redeemed" and cut down, much like George C. Miller's.
I don't remember quite how the rest of the conversation went, but I don't remember getting a plausible explanation as to where he got this information, or if it was just a guess. Since many cards of the day had redemption offers (including many in the late 20's and early 30's), I wouldn't doubt that this could be the case.
Not looking at my SCD, I'm not sure what info Bob has listed, but I don't recall that the manufacturer of this card has ever been identified, thus the nickname of "Star Player", as the set is loaded with them. Hopefully somewhere down the road, a candy box or advertisment will link the cards to a producer..and more information will be established.
