Wasn't much of a punch. If he'd gotten his hips into it he'd have had a nice knockdown...

I had the opportunity to meet Buzz a few weeks ago here in NYC and also had him sign a copy of his new book for me. Also, in keeping with the moon landing theme, I often think many forget that without the sacrifice of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, we would have never made it to the moon. This is one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia I own.

As my paternal grandfather would point out, he was born before the invention of the car and saw a man land on the moon.

Armstrong decided to renew his military life insurance while a grad student at Purdue.
(A wise move.)

Jon, It's sad, not many remember Apollo 1 and the crew. Missions were laser fast in the sixties and there were too many positive NASA milestones to keep folks positive. I remember playing with our Marx astronaut set and building a model of the lunar lander. Space was huge and many kids wanted to be an astronaut. As you alluded to, If it weren't for the snafu's on that training day in '67, the tragedy could have occured on Apollo 11. Likely making the lunar landing just a dream and nothing more.

When you visit, it's hard to disregard the tragedies and there were many. Though the kids are filled with adventure, many adults at KSC are somber. It's a special experience. I frequently think of those three heroes and the other victims, when looking up the beach at Canaveral Light from our little place on the Cape. Geek or not, put Kennedy on your bucket list.

You can lookup orbitting times for the ISS in your area. It occurs just before dawn and right after dusk, sometimes twice a day! It's remarkably easy to spot, especially when the shuttle is docked (as it is now). It's even more stunning when they separate and the shuttle trails the Int'l space station by many miles. Kids love it.http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata...=United+States

Just a few steps from the lighthouse is the decommisioned Pad 34. Launch site of Apollo's 1 and 7. Shot from Jetty Park pier, Canaveral inlet;

Steve -I've been to the cape a few times and always love going. I was there last year again. For some reason, I'm always drawn back to it. Amazement I think!

The JSC is about an hour away from my home and we visit a couple of times a year. The Space Shuttle is amazing, but I am still stunned that we were able to land on the Moon.

I think my cell phone has more computer firepower than the Apollo missions had.

Default Buzz Aldrin signed card from Man on the Moon set '69

Buzz Aldrin visited the Santa Monica, Ca. Little League on opening day and threw out the first pitch. The year I'm not sure of but it was I believe the year was mid to late 1970's. He also did some signing as well and I got a card from the Man on the Moon set #55 signed by him. He shares this card with Neal Armstrong and Michael Collins. This is a wonderful addition to my collection.

Glad this thread has still got a pulse.

Official NASA photo. Neil and Buzz review the LEM/sim, T-5D and counting.

That's always been one of my favorite clips ever on YouTube. Almost makes me wish Mike Tyson had been an astronaut and been approached like that by some zero accomplishment douchebag.

If I had risked my life like Buzz and had some ignorant, conspiracy theorist idiot like that walk up to me and speak those things to me, I might have done the same thing.

Wonder what that guys bucket list looks like?

#1. Tell legendary astronaut he's a coward and a liar for doing what he did. - check

#2. Walk up to FDNY firefighter and ask him if he helped set up the explosive charge that leveled the trade center and killed dozens of his fellow brothers. - check

#3. Tell D-Day veteran he was a misled soldier of fortune who contributed to the enslavement of the European people by Russia and the Allies. - check

#4. Spit in the face of Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger. Tell him he works for an evil corporation who pollutes the sky with CO2 emissions and has contributed to World overpopullation problems by landing that plane so deftly on the Hudson River. - to do.......pencilled in for next Sunday.

My one and only astronaut story (and it's not even mine) is last year my dad went to a closed dinner at the Museum of Flight, the largest private air and space museum in the world. My dad said, "It must have cost a lot to rent this place for dinner." A woman at the table said, "I get priviledges." Turned out she was a former astronaut and president of the museum.
